I am a new owner of a 1971 FJ55 and proud to be apart of the FJ55 IPPS. I've been a Cruiser fan for many years. I've owned a rust-free 1970 FJ40, that I had for 14 years before selling it to a good friend, and currently have a moderately built 1997 80 Series that I've owned for 4 years. 55's have always appealed to me, but I never found one that wasn't a complete rust-bucket . . .

My 'new' Cruiser was originally purchased in Borrego Springs CA and has spent its entire life living in the desert (and it still has small spots of rust!!). Last registered in '98 due to a "blown engine" while driving to Big Bear. The original owners attempted a V8 transplant, but apparently either lost interest or decided a transplant was too much work. So it sat . . . until forum member gringo loco one day asked about the pig. Then: IH8MUD.com - View Single Post - New pig in the pen

I have a good friend who is friends with gringo loco. When he first got the rig, my buddy said "you gotta check out this sweet pig my friend just scored". I saw it; I wanted it; I couldn't believe he got it for free! Original paint, virtually rust free; just an amazing score! Gringo loco's buddy, who gave the 55 to him, had the Cruiser in the family since new.

Once in his possession, he ground out the V8 mounts, bought an entire 2F drive-line from a 60 series, and tried unsuccessfully mounting the 2F. A few weeks ago, our mutual friend tells me he is selling it!!! He lost interest in it. Long story short; I had a vehicle I could sell, listed it, sold it in 2 days, then drove out to Coachella Valley made a deal and picked it up.

For me personally, I've never seen a nearly rust free pig. This one is probably as close as it gets!

Thanks! For now, I'm going to keep it mostly as-is, but fix and replace whatever is needed. First things are to make sure the brakes work properly, de-smog the 2F and get it installed, and tear into the transfer-case because the hi-low shift rod fell/ is pushed into the top of the case (Gotta do some research on this one).

I may put a low lift with 33/10.5 BFG's on it to give it more of a truck look rather than the large station wagon look it has now. 90% of the rubber has deteriorated into power because of the super hot and dry climate it came from. Eventually I'll have the dents and wrinkles tended too along with any rust we find.

Great looking truck and a rare find! Good luck with the project. Gary S
Thanks!

I'm surprised how much the :princess: is into this Cruiser. She never took much interest in the 40 or the 80, but the 55 . . . she is really excited to get the Pig running and take it for a drive.

It is a well guarded secret- Chicks dig pigs!!!:D
Pssh! If I'd only known that when I was 19 . . . :hillbilly:

(Side note):
We've got to get together so I can figure out the engine mount situation . . .

engine mount is pretty straight forward. the newer engine combo will bolt right into the older mounts,,, so if you can see where they originally mounted your golden, if not we can all help with getting you the measurements for correct placement.
there are a few particulars about this engine swap we can talk about when your ready.

I ground out any remaining trace of the V8 mounts and didn't see any sign of the original frame mounting locations.

What particulars? Fitment/placement issues?

Do you know what year the 60 series drivetrain is?

I will be particularly interested in how to mount a split case in a Pig as this would be important if one wanted to install an H55F 5 spd into a Pig.
I believe the drive-line is most likely from an '83 60. The block casting Sept. '82.

really just a couple, the original tranny mounted with the bellhousing, the 60 has the flat areas cast into the bellhousing but no tapped holes. you can mount the 60 series tranny either way, as the flat areas on the bellhousing will line up with the pigs original mounts(if you put them back).
the other is you will need to use a short shaft water pump from an early 2F engine to clear the radiator.

i put a 60 engine/tranny/case in the pig toddslater has, maybe he wouldnt mind chiming in on anything i might be forgetting.

Thanks, so you prob have the "short" 4 spd w/o the ~5" spacer?

Rhino, did you use the crossmember under the 60 tranny?

I have two bellhousings. The one mounted to the 2F has 2 tapped holes on each side. The other bellhousing has all 3 per side. I believe the PO said the extra bellhousing was from an F engine. The tranny has holes for the cradle/cross-member mount. I also have an extra water pump, but it might also be from an F eng.

Don't know . . . If the 5" spacer is something obvious, then it does not have it.

what i shoulda said was not ALL the holes,,, i drilled and tapped the extras needed for the bellhousing mounts and did not use the cross member mount.
Ah okay.

The 55 also came with one of those aftermarket cross-members that bolt to the access cover on the transfer case. A buddy of mine in AZ said it work work with the split case. But I can't see why!?

pretty sure it will work, i was never a fan of that style crossmember because of how it mounts to the case but there are many of them in use over the years with no problems.
i like the 55 style bellhousing mounts myself, i always liked the way you could take the tranny off and not mess with cross members or supporting the engine ect. makes me wonder why toyota changed it with the 60 series.

Well the tranny got longer in '85, might have been too much weight hanging off the bellhousing...

Well, I'll get it together and see how it looks. If it fits, I'll probably use it.
