2F fan clutch & harmonic balancer

just finished installing a new timing cover gasket on my 60. Timing Cover Gasket - IH8MUD.com Forum
while i had things torn down, of course i noticed some problems. my fan clutch is pretty worn out and i checked the FSM manuals i have and can't seem to find any details on what might be bad. basically, i can take hold of the fan and it feels like a bushing or something is trashed (has slop back & forth). is there a bushing that goes along with a new fan clutch or is it one piece to replace? i called cruiserDan but haven't heard back from him yet. i'd like to have something for this weekend to work on. thanks.

I have a fan clutch off a FJ-40 2F laying around you can take apart and see how it works. Remember Bob(TPI) is coming to the work day and will bring parts if he has them in stock.

guys, over the week i've started to notice a grumbling sound that has slowly gotten louder. thought maybe a belt was going bad so i started poking around and found the smog pump to crank belt loose. after looking closer, i saw the pulley that is attached to the balancer screwed up. the small rivets that hold it to the balancer are missing. the pulley is flopping around and sounds nasty. how the hell does this happen? is it possible the new fan clutch snapped them off? i'm glad i found this when i did or i'd be in deeper trouble.

I was waiting for an expert to dive in with the answers, but none has shown up yet. Consequently, let me ask my question. Have you spun the smog pump by hand feeling for drag/resistance? I have had two smog pumps on my '81 FJ40 seeze over the years. For me it was a hard seeze that came on very abruptly after some mild clicking. If your pump has started to fail and seeze, may be lead to your pulley failure. Consequently, I am having trouble envisioning the fan clutch contributing to this which is also why I am looking at the smog pump.

FYI, the reason for my smog pump failures was a tired engine. Enough blow by was going into the air filter from the crack case and then sucked into the smog pump that the composite impeller blades delaminated & seezes the pump. My crutch solution was to disconnect the smog pump feeder line from the air filter assembly and add a dedicated air filter to the line. The filter I used was for a lawn mower that slide right into the rubber feed line for the smog pump. At the air filter assembly, I pump a rubber cap over the open port. This ended my smog pump failures and I am still baby'ing this tired 2F along with an over haul waiting in the future.

Thanks, i spun the smog pulley by hand this morning and it felt pretty free. Not like it would spin forever, but definitely not locked up. The odometer shows 230+ but the PO installed a jasper 2F @ 150 roughly so I don't expect much blowby yet.

I'm going to remove the balancer & pulley tonight and see if I can repair it. I really don't want to spend the money on a new balancer unless somebody has a used one cheap, i repeat, cheap!

If it is thes ame as a FJ-40 2f, I have one you can have cheap, Todd may be coming up in the next few days to work on his truck and could pick it up.:)

Roger,
As I recall, FJ40s with AC has an additional groove in the pulley over 40s without AC. Consequently since this a 60 which probably has AC, you may want to compare a few notes on the details of the pulleys that you have on hand.

*Update*

Well, i finally was able to sneak away from the x-mas shopping and start wrenching. Once the pulley and balancer were removed I was able to see that each rivet was basically worn down flush to the shaft plate (or whatever you call it). I had to use a punch and hammer to get all 7 out. Found little mushroom pieces of broken rivet inside the balancer.

Once I pounded all the old rivets out, the shaft plate fell off and i got worried. I forgot to mark the orientation of this plate before I removed it. But thanks to those Japanese Engineers, I found that you can't put the piece back together 180-deg, one hole will not line up. I was worried the counterweights in the balancer would be 180-deg off and i'd have one screwed up 2F.

One more picture of the old mushroomed out rivets and balancer. Here's my next question. What's the best way to fix this? The existing rivets measure roughly 9mm in diameter. Would bolts work to put this thing back together or will extra weight with all the bolts, washers & nuts mess up the total weight of the balancer?

Sans any other suggestion, I gues I would drill for 10mm and go with hardened bolts but don't try that unless you get no other suggestions.
 
I've decided to try 6-5/16 hex bolts with flat washers and nylon lock nuts. Picked up some Grade8 stuff so hopefully it will be strong enough. What else is there to do on Christmas Eve than work on a LC!;)

I made sure the socket fit BEFORE i put the balancer back on. Glad I did because it was close!

Good luck with that. Probably should link this to a post in the 60 section if it holds together. I am certain that you will get some input when someone sees that frankinbalancer!
