Hi all

Coming to that time of replacing tyres. Currently have some old 31.6 inches 265 75 R16 Nitto Terra Grappler.

I believe my 80 has a 2’ lift? Sagging.

Should I get some 285 75 R16 or stick with these. Looks like Ive got plenty of room but dont necessarily want loss of power and worse mileage etc. But I reckon 285 would look good as currently looking a bit skinny for the truck’s height even though new tyres should look better as now they are pretty much Gone.

Driving is 70% pavement, 30% offroad but not mudding. Daily driving the truck and living in it 50% of the time. Just living the Aussie life in the country. Snow a couple of times a year. Was thinking on Falken Wildpeak AT4 as I heard not too noisy.

Thanks for the recommendations

I don’t think you will lose any mileage going with the 285s might even gain a bit 😉
And they definitely will look better
I say do it.

Skinny 255s will be another option. I had 255/85r16 before going to 315 and i miss that extra pep

Gain a bit? How does it work? Thanks for the input
A 285 will be a taller tire lowering the engine RPMs at any given speed

I went from 265's to 285's and heres what I found,
  1. Nicer ride, more so when off road aired down
  2. Change in gearing I think is better suited to the Auto Trans, seems to be more in the torque curve as opposed to revs if you get what I mean
  3. Economy around town unchanged and on the highway is definitely better
  4. I really think they should have been the OEM size tyre

Only downside is your speedo is 4km/h out at 100 km/h so beware of the plods

I really rate the 285/75R16 in the Yokohama Geolandar AT G018s. Steering feels nice, no noticeable decrease in mileage, they're on the lighter side when it comes to an all terrain LT rated tire. Didn't know Yokohama were no longer manufactured in Japan though.

Thanks for the input. A442F auto tranny, I dont think I would need to re-gear, correct? But better to do so?

Nice. Yeah I think 33' wildpeak in 123 load rating might be heavy as

yes, thats why i decided against the wildpeaks, they're a heavy a$$ tire!

I haven't re-geared and run the same transmission as you. Haven't had an issue with speedo being out enough to cause issues with speed cameras etc.

Nice thanks, Ill consider these, it was between the WP, the Yokos and the Toyo open country. Might just get the best deal

I went this route myself before the 315's. Re-geared with the 315's to get the "pep" back. Went with 5-29's as a suggestion from Zuke (@gearinstalls.com ) when I mentioned I'd be towing an off road trailer. I love the 5-29 & 315 combo, except when trying to do 80 on 80 in my 80 (80 mph on I80 in my 80 series...) The 255/85r16's were great with the 2.5" OME lift, before the re-gear.

Since you mention Toyo, you might want to look at the M55 tire. It's not in the "Open Country" group, because it's considered a commercial grade tire. I have a 2.5" OME lift and ran Toyo M55, 255/85/r16 size before going with the 315's that I'm currently running. They are in the A/T class of tread and will outlast many A/T tires in the wear department. For all around use, they're hard to beat. They're not the cheapest, but you get what you pay for with Toyo!

I got Bob Jane to Price Beat Tempe Tyres.. would never use Bob Jane again though, my local store was a nightmare to deal with. Poorly balanced wheels and damaged my rims.

I've run both sizes a decent amount and prefer the 285s. The smaller/stock size do have a little more pep and help make the 80 feel a tad more nimble in my opinion though the difference is small. I've landed on Michelin LTX 285s and don't anticipate running any other tire on my 80 in the future. My uses include occasionally towing a 3k lb camper and primarily on-paved-road use with occasional gravel and dirt / rough road use but very little "off roading".

@jeanbono
You can run stock 4:10s on 285s but if you are planning in the future to move up to 35s then regearing to 4:56 is the sweet spot. Alot of folks like my self move to 37s after getting the 35s and then realized 4:88 is needed since i know one day i will go to 37s. The 5:29 is an overkill (unless 40s+). What you gain in low RPM, you lose on highway with 5:29.

These are on my vehicles:
96 daily with 285s on 4:10 (80mph at 2500rpm) 13.5-14mpg. Dobinson stock height.
97 (pending turbo) with 315s on 4:10 (80mph at 2600. Sweet spot for the Tutbo ) w/out turbo12-13mpg. OME 3" lift
93 Turbo with 37s on 4:88 (80mph at 2900rpm...but preferred for the Turbo 4:56) mpg...don't ask. Terrain Tamer&Dobs 4" lift

I'm currently running KO2's in 285/75.
In the fall when Costco has their sale I'll be go to Michelin LTX in 265/75
Hopefully...
Less noise, and maybe, just maybe a bump in fuel economy?

no need to re-gear at all, what i mean is that the slightly larger diameter tyre has a slight effect on overall gearing which I have found to be better and more suited than the 265/75x16 tyre. Its a subtle difference but noticeable
