255/85/R16 tires? Thoughts?

Firestone Destination AT for me. Three sets have worn like iron. Mud is not my friend with the AT.

I can hear the ST Maxx when under 60mph, especially when it's been more than 5k miles between rotations. That said, the ST Maxx is much, much quieter than the worn out AT3's were on it before. Keep them rotated and I don't think you will have a noise complaint.

Anyone wonder or know if 255 will wear faster than 285?

My 60 is stored (not at home) for the winter so I cannot provide numbers to this enrich this post, but I find my 255/85 Toyo MT (on my 60) wear much faster than I thought. IIRC, somewhere from 19/32 to 12/32 after 15 000miles. Alignment is correct and rotation too.

I already ad 265/75 Toyo MT on my ex-BJ70 and they last very long. Thought my 60 is much heavier (6600), I really wonder if 285 will last longer due to the larger foot print.

Thought ?

David, 285 as more material, so it would have to last longer. If going skinny tire goal to improve mpg, i highly doubt you will see any difference with the diesel. And if you plan on going offroading on sandy beach or desert, i would keep larger surface contact. I think the new modern 100 need to grow on you. ;) Leave the skinny for the 60!

Just bought a set of BFG KM3s in 255/85R/16. Like them a lot already. They handle lighter if anything than the BFG KOs in 265/75R/16 that came with my LX 470. Tire noise is very minimal, grip on snow and ice is good. Pictures maybe this week end when I get the truck washed.

Finally rolling with 255s on the Hundy. Why I took so long to do this is beyond me. I've run every other size. This is the best for the 100, IMNSHO.

I'm leaning towards skinny myself. But a bit worried about sand, though, admittedly. Although feedback I got was positive about that too. Just having a hard time wrapping my head around that one, I guess.
Aired down, you get as much contact, or more, than with a 285. It’s just that the contact patch is longer and skinnier than it is with the wider tire. Think of it being like a cross country ski. I have them on my Xterra Pro-4x. I love them on and off road.

Was think of going the 255 86 16 route. Do you have any more pictures from diff angles? I would also probably add a 1.25" spacers.
I'll see what I can find for pics, but IMNSHO there is zero reason to run 1.25" spacers other than a subjectively strange aesthetic. A 33" tire correction over 31" tire original puts us at about 7mm-8mm of additional offset to correct for KPI and OE steering geometry.

I can think of a few.... more articulation on the rear straight axle... more body protection as the wheels become more sacrificial and add more stability when aded 2.5" of track width.

This video might help anyone on the fence between short and fat vs tall and skinny. I have 285's on my 2" lifted LX470, which I love the look of, but will be going 255 on my HDJ100 with AHC.

Do you have the tire you're going with picked out yet? I'd do the AT4s in 255/85/16 if they were E rated.

I'm going ATW4s C rated. There are only a few brands offering that size and inline the lighter C rating for what I'm planning on this next build.
