god, it's like a post on this subject once a week, and I'm getting tired...

Not in the, "you're a newb, search!" kinda way. I just H8 looking up the stuff I wrote in like 30 different threads, and I either don't care to search for them, or I forgot where they are.

I just H8 saying (having to type) the same thing over and over again.

stock turbo's are junk. costly to rebuild, so you shouldn't. They aren't very good units anyway, and H8 the heat.

the stock manni's love to crack. replacements are cheaper than going the custom route.

they put out 7psi.

the best thing to do is swap a supra turbo in. it is lesser prone to cracking on the intake side than the stock CT20. the CT26 (supra turbo) also puts out only 7psi but is has a lot of aftermarket support so you can mess with the boost if you like. The CT26 has more CFM so adding an intercooler will have less of an effect than say, adding a intercooler to the CT20.

the ct26 upgrade is not hard.

there was a guy on FleaBay selling rebuilt Garret T-3's and custom exhaust manni's for Toyota 22R's for $400. That is an awesome deal, considering the support for that turbo...and the fact his exhaust manni is probably better than Toyota's

Sweet thanks I'll check it out. I was told if I did need a new turbo Garrett was the way to go.

Then you'd have to do this:

From this thread: Turbo 4runner

yeah, it is true you can do that, but it's my nature to tell you the most economical way to do something. I just H8 seeing people spend money :D

I'll try to find the RTE forum, it's got a great How-to in it about using a CT-26

ahhh, looky here...

22RTE - EFI and Tuning

more specifically here

CT26 Installation

Also, with a relatively low c/r even for a turbo. You should be able to mix and match the 22RE pistons OR (not and) an RE head. And so you know, a RE block does not have the turbo oiling provisions drilled and tapped like the RTE already does. (not a real a biggy)

The stock Turdblow only puts out 7psi, the CT-26 does to, but it has more volume so it would lend it's self to an intercooler and turbo mods better....

General Automotive Tech: 22R Block and Head Identification

Just so you know, anytime you add power you lose some engine longevity. But there are lots of improvements that can be made on that engine that are not over the top.

I was also told the reason why these are rare finds is because its rare to find one that is currently running.

lol, das is true

I might have left some thing out...whoops, like a guy on EBay that sells rebuilt T-3's and CUSTOM ex. mannis for $400...

I haven't seen him in a while but I bet you can still find him. He might have his own site by now.

The turbo's (CT26?? I think).......... like to S the bed, from what I've heard and are spendy to replace.

that's the CT-20 you're talking about.

The CT-26 is better, but still questionable as an alternative IMO.

I've read that the CT-20's have a heat problem and like to crack the housing. It's probably not as noted b/c by this time I'm sure the stock exhaust manni has folded and $ide lined the truck by now. They are expensive to replace or rebuild.

blah, blah...

If I had one functioning, I'd keep it like it was. If it ever went, I'd go the CT-26 rout, and if I had plenty of money, the T-3.

LC's header is about thou ($)... = doubtful I'll ever get to use one

Thanks for all the info. well not sure to by the truck or not know it has 170000 miles on it. It also has the 5 speed can buy the truck for 500. Thanks again for all the info.

better get that tranny while you can, supply's are going fast!!

Thanks Hilux going to look at the truck 2morrow morning on your advice will probably pickup. Sounds like worth more for parts the giving for the whole truck. Thanks again all.

Buy it. Take the tranny out, keep it. Sell the engine and all the wiring to some fool. The rear diff is also worth a little more, about $100. Toss the rest in the scrap yard.

I did this exact thing a couple of years ago, bought a non-running '87 turbo truck on eBay, total was $700 delivered to my driveway. I got $350 for the engine, sold enough of the rest off so I basically ended up with a "free" R151F (as long as you don't count my labor).
