I've got a 4runner that i'm finally gonna get on the road again and wanna know what you guys recommend for slight upgrades to this little motor for a little extra jam.
The head is freshly machined, with toyota head gasket, studs, new timming chain and water pump waiting to go on.
I'm thinking a cam, ignition maybe?? Don't want propane, just a few simple add-ons while its apart. Post up with what you did for a few extra squirrels.
Thanks. Cheers!

You might try a "performance" cam from either Ted (engnbldr.com), Tim (DOARacing.com), LC Engineering or TRD. I think it's sometimes labelled as a 268 degree cam (or at least one of the versions is).

A header will help somewhat and might actually be the best bang for your money. I am rather biased and would only point you toward LC Engineering. They make a ceramic coated, stainless header. Finish downstream with a 2 1/4" exhaust system (they also make a complete stainless CAT-back exhaust). Be warned, the entire set-up costs about $1k but I don't think you will ever have to worry about your exhaust again.

Don't worry with the intake side until you do the above.

Keep in mind that it's hard to get more than half a squirrel or so out of these engines unless you start from the ground up with performance in mind.
