Driving home yesterday in typical traffic. 1 hour of idling and stop and go to get through the tunnel. Truck temp gauge moves past middle towards the hot zone. this alarms me quite a bit. Ran my heater and fan at full blast, which brought gauge back to normal. Replaced fan coupler with a different one today. They felt the same. Any other ideas about what would cause this? Truck is a 1990 with 22RE.

Cooling system issues can be hard to diagnose. Possible solutions:

  • Fan clutch, as you appear to have done.
  • Coolant low
  • Thermostat
  • Radiator plugged up
  • Water pump, but unless it's making noise, or dripping out the weep hole, it's probably not the issue.

Other than that the cooling system is pretty simple.

Coolant level was fine. Thermostat and water pump are both under a year old. Not making noise. I have a brand new spare water pump, so if it continues, I can change that. Radiator is about 5 years old. Both fan clutches were at least slightly used, but feel fairly stiff to turn. Truck was fine on the highway tonight, just warmed yesterday when idling for an hour.

I would check your radiator for flow and sediment buildup.

I'm also a big fan of the dual temp thermostats on the 22re.

I put a separate water temp gauge on my 3vz right on the top radiator hose aluminum cast neck. makes reading temperature 100x easier. and not to mention mine is programmable to a certain temp. when it goes above 205 the back lighting turns red and flashes at me.

Gauge went to about 3/4 or half way between "normal" and hot. I ran the heater fan at full blast and things returned to normal pretty quickly. Radiator is not stock, and is about 4 years old. Just returned from about 1000 ks of pavement roadtrip. No overheating. I am looking for a new, oem radiator starting Monday.

old hoses? if they get out of shape that changes things too
