22RE or V6?!

The headgasket issue on the 3.0 is compounded by the cross over pipe dupming right at the corner on #6 cylinder....

I thought the #5 was the most common failure point?

And the going from a 14mm bolt to a 13mm didnt help things either.

I (hear me now) CAN NOT KILL MY 14MM, 289K on the DONAR's ODO, TOYOTA 3.0 3VZ.

:grinpimp:......and I've tried

I only did seals in the transfer NO HG's!...I like to think Copper will be my next.

Its parked out back due to two hit and runs.......$1,500 wont get the motor!

Personally, I find most of the above to be completely hilarious. Anyone who points to the headgaskets as a reason to NOT own a 3.0 is ignorant, IMHO.

What about timing chains on 22 series motors?
What about head gaskets on 22 series motors?
What about weak transmissions (g52) behind many 22 series motors?
What about poor EGR design on the 22re?
blah blah blah.

People hate the 3vze because they WANT to hate it. No other reason.
I've owned over 30 toyota trucks. I've owned 4 3.0's, 5 3.4's, 2 4.7's, unknown number of 22 series.
I've done more work on the 4-cyls in the form if timing chains and head gaskets than any of my 3.0's. And don't forget, the X06 campaign of the early 3.4's requiring new HG's as well.

I've had 3.0's get 13mpg and 3.0's get 22mpg - depends on style and mods. I've had 22re's get 13mpg and 22re's get 22mpg... stock and lifted rigs. The 22re is lighter, is easier to work on, has just as many "issues," and will never be more powerful than a 3.0. The 3.0 is toyota's smoothest engine ever, loves to rev, can get poor mileage, sucks to work on, and will always have more power than a 22re.

I could go on a diatribe for hours, but it's not worth it. You like what you like, period.

For me, if I was building a truck from the frame up, I'd go 4.7 or diesel. If I was buying to build, I'd probably buy an 87 SR5 4Runner or a 94-95 SR5 xcab w/ the V6 and all options.

I currently own a 3.0 and a 3.4.

maybe it is 5... I don't have a picture in front of me....

(Forgive me I had it but got bumped off)

I had to google it to find but the #5 is p-side rear.
The #6 is D-side rear.

It seems to me looking back I heard the most people say the common failure was on the p-side rear. But that's just my experience.

blah, blah, I forgot. The exhaust should be recalled.

(something in the ad's here is killing me)

most failures are #6. most valve cover gasket failures are at the back of pass side. odd, eh?

GREAT STUFF bro!I like it!Taking a stand and saying it like it is!Good info!Chicago

Just get a turbo 22R runner.

Problem solved ;)

is it the speed of your 60 that is killing ya?

Hey there,

Great post Chicago! I am with ya on your thinking.... trying to make a rig into something it is not... after wheeling my built 55 (350, 465, longs, lockers, 38's, etc.) for over 5 years... I am back in a mini for primary trail duty. Between fuel, beating the body into oblivion, and chasing replacement parts that broke due to the weight and HP.....

On your search for the 4unner.. I put a 22RTE into an '84 runner, it had the extra ooomph to help on the hills and trails but nothing too great.. MPG's were good though. Best all Toy solution.

If I were you, I would find a Runner with solid axle as built as possible with a 4cyl. (maybe already geared, dualed, and locked?) and not rusty... drive it and wheel it... then gather parts for a 4.3L V6 swap and do it whenever the time arises. Great engine, reliable, has longevity, fits well, easy to get parts, easy to trouble shoot, etc. and has enough power for road climbs and hill climbs.. may lacka little in low end torque but dual cases solve that.

If ya can't find a clean '84-'85 Runner, get a 4cyl. '86-'89... definately get the gear driven t-case that comes with 4cylinders....SAS when ya can though the IFS will last with 35's for a long time no matter what ya read.

HTH,

I have never owned a 3.0 but I have owned several 22re's. If 22re's have just as many issues, then the 3.0 MUST be one hell of an engine. The 22re's have very few issues in my opinion/experience and timing chains are a maint item and really should not be considered an "issue". Never had HG issues in any of the trucks I have owned and do not have one now on my 175k mile truck.

But I follow what you mean.

Juke!!! You're back!!! Long time no see any posts since you left the hundy world!

Yeah...
I was ready to shoot bullets into it coming home from DV last weekend. I had a psychiatric vacation on the side of the road where I had to pull over.:bang: There was lots of swaring to be heard for miles!:whoops:
Granted, Ive done every mod possible to KILL the performance and in the end, its my OWN fault...35-40 MPH in 2nd gear up over Mammoth pass and temps running high was NO FUN! The whole trip home was misery. I got the "stink eye" from an old lady in the 2 lane stretch after Bridgeport...
Aside from the longer trips...I LOVE THE RIG! Just something HAS to be done and its either a new rig, or V8, or the possiblity or 2FE and H55, but Im still not convinced that the latter will make it much better.
Just the same, from what Im hearing here, I just might be in the same boat with a "FO Runnah" that is modded too with either motor in question.

Just considering the options while sticking with my love of toyotas!

All the help and responses are very appreciated!

I see your 62 project hasn't cost you enough $$$ yet :flipoff2:. You better see if you can even FIT into a mini first :lol::lol:.

Oooops...I just saw that 'spend money light' light up on your windshield buddy :D

I've done about 6 head gaskets. I know of a number of cracked heads as well. Heck, there are about three trucks on craigslist in MN right now with blown HG's (22re's).

Hmm. Odd. You are the first I have heard who have stated such problems with the 22re. Of course, not saying that do not exist just that I have not heard a theme of HG issues with the 22re.

I guess I have been lucky.

Take care

The money you put into a mini making it do what you want it to would easily be solved with a V8 conversion.

And, in the end, you would still have your 60.

Mini's are cool, but they weigh almost as much as your 60. With a 4 banger..

The auto is killing you, but more motor would make it considerably better.

Bob's actually downright fun! And he only has a 302...

You finally got Bob running...havent been in the HC section in a while...
Im starting to realize your statement above.
I contacted iaintscared to enlist his wisdom on the V8 conversion.
Ive always LOVED the minis, but I sure do LOVE my cruiser too, and ive got a TON of time and money into it already...
Whats a little more?!

Thanks for all the help gents!
Its been extremely helpful in making a decision.

How much do you have into your 100 series now?
