On start up the check engine light come on, engine was running fine. Started my drive and noticed the engine lacking in power with a slight miss, turned around to switch out cars, missing got worse followed by back fires. The engine would idle, but upon depressing the accelerator the miss fires got worse as well as the back fires. Im going to read the codes today and do some hardcore troubleshooting. The engine has been completely rebuilt and running very good for the last 5 months, just thought I would post this up for some thoughts. Yes all the injectors have been cleaned, yes I replaced the fuel filter during the rebuild, yes the fuel pump is new, yes the TPS is new, yes the intake has been cleaned, yes the head is brand NEW. Thinking it has something to do with the ignition system, perhaps a bad coil or igniter. New plugs and wires were used during the rebuild.

Any thoughts?

You said the CEL was on. Start there. There are a few things you didn't mention that could be the problem.

Yeah that's my plan only if my shotgun troubleshooting does not work, there is a good chance the igniter is causing this problem, I have a spare I can swap in.

Could it possibly be that valve timing went out of synch for some reason? something lose in the timing chain assembly. If you had the truck w/o running for a long time the old fuel could have caused the valves to stick causing weird engine behavior.

Nah man, valve timing really can't go out of synch unless the timing chain broke, as well as a whole bunch of other things that would have to go wrong for that to happen. The engine has less then 10k mil since the overhaul. I removed and replaced the igniter, that fixed my problem. The igniter plays a very important role I the starting and operation of these engines, sine a 22RE does not have a crank or cam position sensor the igniter uses the magnetic trigger inside of the dizzy to tell the ECU if the engine is rotating. The igniter provides the ECU with an RPM signal, it is that signal that the ECU needs in order for it to trigger the injectors, further it controls the spark advance and retard.
