My Hilux had a ticking noise from time to time that came and went. Very random.

I did a tune with all OEM parts (cap, rotor, plugs, etc etc)

I finally got around to adjusting the valves on it the other day. Followed the FSM and have done many many vavle adjustments before. Now the ticking is constant and much louder. Any clues to what it could be?

I am not sure how healthy the motor is as it is a rather new rig to me. ( Just finished up the paint, wheels, tires though ;) )

Thanks for the help...

Howdy! My 22RE sounds like that. I only hear it when it is running at no load, such as not accelerating or decelerating. I have never been able to "tune" it out. It has been like this since I got it 8 years ago. It has over 200,000 on the original engine, and it still runs out just fine. John

Awesome, thanks for the info...

I knew a well tuned 2f sounded like a sowing machine but wasnt sure the 22R did as well.

Been putting a lot of work into the rig since I got it a month and half ago...

Just thought I would throw some pictures up for the hell of it.

you probably have got the adjustment to loose. the gauge has to be tight in between the tappet and the rocker.

Yulp I know, Like I said it was done to FSM spec. I have been working on yotas for years, just new to 22R's and not sure what they sound like.

I'll have to double check I guess and make sure I tightened all the adjuster nuts but I am 99% sure I did.

Howdy! I just came from a club get together/show N shine. Talked to one of my buds there that has over 380,000 on his original 22RE. He still wheels the snot out of it. Just keep the rpm down, cause that ain't no 240Z Datsun, ya know? I rarely take min over 3000 around town. It's good to see you get it out for some wheelin. My son planted 5;29's and a Detroit in the rear axle of ours, and then went nuts on biggy Dodge diesels, like a Cummins 6bt. Got to admit, they do have some grunt. So, my truck still has 4:11's in the front, so no wheeling til I get some new gears for it. John

noise sugestion.

:steer: I have had noisey timing chains due to slack in it and the tensioner from old age. It may need replacing. They make a double you can find on lcenginerring.com an some times on e-bay. You may consider a re-build by time you take the front of the motor off.

How many miles on it? Is it the original cam? When was the last time the timing chain and tensioner was replaced?

Mine rattled like a hay baler when I would start it up, until I replaced all of the above. Now it's nice and quiet. Well... except for the piston slap.

I am not sure when the last time the timing chain was replaced. Like I said this is a rather new rig to me (only 1.5 months) and the P.O. was kinda of a hack mechanic. So, I have been going threw just about every system since I have gotten it. I guess timing chain is the next on the list... Any advice on the best place to get it? I got most of my stuff through C-Dan but I have a feeling a timing chain from Toyota is an expensive one.

This guy has a good rep here, and I've bought from him. I just don't have enough experience with the parts to offer an opinion.

had my TC replaced oil pump rebuilt and valves adjst. on my 89 a few months back and mine sounds like that. at first it was very faint but recently its gotin a little louder. still runs fine, and like inkpot mentioned can't hear it while accel. just sittin still?

On some of the valve covers (don't recall the years) if the nuts are over torqued the the cover can contact the rockers, causing a loud click. Try slightly backing off the nuts with the motor running to see if this is the cause?

This is a good point, if the VC gasket is old and getting squished, then the tappets can actually start contacting the VC. It's a very tight tolerance fit under there. I had to grind a few spots off mine when I switched to ARP head studs.

I have bought several parts from engnbldr, I would say they are "OK", but not up to OEM standards. I used one of his timing chain kits once, we had to do a bit of grinding on the front cover to get it to clear the metal guide, and the gaskets were so poor I tossed them and got OEM ones. The chain and sprockets are fine, but I would *only* use an OEM tensioner and front main seal.

Well, I popped the VC off again to double check and make sure everything was to speck and it was.

Also checked the VC for scoring or marks from the rockers coming in contact with it, none to be seen. Also the gasket is new.

I am running fresh 20-50w oil as the FSM says to run. Plus living in Florida with higher temps I thought it was a good idea as 10w30 flows like water down here.

I started the truck and when cold it does not make the noise but once it warms up it sounds like piston slap.

I am not sure what else to do. I will call C-Dan and order up the parts for the TC for the next oil change...

Thanks again guys,

Did it have this sound before the adjustment? Did you adjust them hot, at normal operating temp?

As the valve train wears, the rocker and shaft bearing surfaces wear, causing play. It's also common to wear a small line, divot, on the cam contact surface on the rocker. These can cause a valve tick, but aren't a reliability issue, unless extremely worn. On higher mileage motors I run them at .007 and .011 hot, most of the time makes them quiet.

I run em at .007 and .011 to keep them quiet, too. Adjust them more to the tighty side, not slidy loose.
The only way to get them quiet is to get new adjusters from Toyota.
Then you can hear any piston slap...

Sorry it has taken me so long to respond... Been a bit to busy lately.

The noise got louder pretty much after I changed the oil to 20w-50 but before the valve adjustment. I am not sure what oil grade was in there before but I am thinking of switching to 10-40 next oil change to see if it changes anything.

I am going to pop the cover back off this weekend and adjust to the tighter spec. Hopefully it will quiet it down.

On the upside though, despite it sounding like a diesel and the worn out tranny.

I took my weekly drive down the coast (122 miles round trip @ 4.4 gals). Road is around 55mph with not many stops...Everything was measured by GPS and I have done the same drive for the past 3 years 61 miles down and back. Filled up before I felt and filled up when I got back to see what I got.... First time in a long time I only put $16 dollars in the tank...

I love 4cylinder 5 speeds... 27mpg
