I Have an 82 toyota 4x4 pickup 5speed. with a 22r 4cyl,and a Aprox 200k miles, the head gasket has gone out. what is the best thing to do relatively cheap or economically ? Rebuild or Find a used engine? or should I try just rebuilding the head and new head gasket? thoughts and opinions would be great? Cheers:)

I lost my head gasket around 190k. I only changed the gasket and timing components. I pulled the engine still running strong at 215k to drop a diesel in. Depending on what else is going on, you may be as lucky as I was.

Did it smoke on deceleration? did it burn oil? If no, than pull the had, have it gone thru, and make sure the block is flat.

I did a ring & valve job on mine with 280k miles, and drove it another 200K+ before I drove it to the wreckers.

Truck only broke down twice in 24 years. It was an 85 4x4 PU. Bought it new for $7995.

As long as you didn't keep driving for too long after the head gasket went you can just replace the gasket. You could take the head and block into a machine shop and have them resurface block and shave the head. Make sure you use a toyota gasket, only 20 bucks or so. Also if I was you I would redo the timing chain setup. In my opinion as long as your block isn't cracked it would be a better idea to do this instead of buying a used cheap engine, as you have no idea what that engine would be like.

Replace the head gasket.
Rebuild the cylinder head.
As others have said, now is the time to replace the timing chain/gears. I didn't and paid dearly.

just did one

well i jusrt did mine it was cheap 30 dollar gasket warranty 1 yr.
silicome black or blue rtv intake gasket studs & exhaust gasket

If you decide to tear into your engine, just remember to torque everything to spec. You can get away with just tightening by feel on a lot of things on your rig, but the head is alluminum. So be carefull. And also, if u get into it and u find a bunch of things wrong with it, which I doubt you will because these engines are very stoute, u could always buy a crate engine with 50k or less, for around 650. And I think they even have warranties
