Right! No sales tax when you sell private party.

No, I think you're not understanding the comment. People in high tax states might be better off trading the vehicle as it reduces the tax basis for the transaction. If you are buying an $80K vehicle, and you trade in a $60K vehicle, you pay sales tax on the $20K difference instead of $80K.

So pretend tax is 8% on that purchase. If no trade, you owe $6400 in tax. If you have $60K trade, you owe 8% on the $20K difference, $1600. Therefore, to come out "ahead," you need to cover that difference. And if you're like many people, you need to cover that difference + your time and "hassle" of a private party sale. Even on "easy" sales, I find I generally put 6+ hours into prepping, listing, and selling. So unless a private sale is going to be a huge + cash win, forget it, trade it.

Sales Tax.
Sometimes a dealer will help you with the sales tax on a private sale of the car if you are buying a new one. They way they do it this: You figure out the new car you want to buy. You find a buyer for your car. You have the buyer of your used car write the check to the dealer. You sign the title to the dealer, like it was a trade in (no sales tax on the new car for the value of the 'trade in'). The dealer gives the title of your old car to the buyer. You pay the dealer the difference between the sale price on the old car and the new car price, plus tax on that difference. Done.

I paid 75,999.00 less $500.00 in Toyota cash from State Fair of Texas, so net pay $74,999.00 for 2018 back in November of 2017. Had to keep fighting to prevent them for adding sh*t on the invoice that was already on the vehicle, like clear coat, window tent, floor mats, remote start, rear power door.

I had made my deal with the manager and the finance guys kept saying these things are always added on. I just said not on my deal, the agreement was all in all done no add-ons. They did it but they sure wanted to keep slipping things in. I had to walk out for a day while the finance guy confirmed with the manager the price. No rear TVs but I didn't want those.

These things are just not moving. I predict another price decrease for land cruiser. The price point for LC and LX got crazy. There is just too much competition out there in the “mrs got-rocks club. These folks just don’t use the capability of the 200. Rover sports are killing the LX so they created the mono-spec LX ‘two row’ option. Limited int colors and no options make this new Lexus LX much less after a bit of discounting. It is now less expensive than a new LC.

My LX salesman made a point to mention the land cruiser situation when I told him I was going to price one. I suspect a significant price drop for LC or no change and complete 200 series phase out for Toyota in a few years. They are developing an FJ style rig in the RAV4 size category right now. I hope they don’t kill the US Land Cruiser but it looks to me Lexus will carry the water going forward with LX badged as a LC in other countries with a new play vehicle stepping in for the US cruiser badge in the future.

An important cultural issue for the Japanese is to ‘save face’. I suspect it is the only reason the 200 US land cruiser still exists. Oldest continuous name badge in the U.S. market and the name that saved Toyota's U.S. business.

We will all be buying LX models in the future and importing Toyota badges and grills /parts from UAE to de badge them.

Of course I could be wrong.

You maybe right about them not moving, I don't know. But I know my LC drives better than my Lexus ES 350 ever did and when I drive it, it makes me smile.

So I don't really care what the Mrs. Rocks drives/wants, I want a quality, durable and reliable vehicle that is equally at home at the hunting lease as out on the town. To me it just checked all the right boxes, or at least more than any other vehicle out on the market.

Here's to hoping they keep them coming until I wear this out and buy my next one, which I could then be buried in.

I agree, The Land Cruiser is the perfect vehicle if you enjoy quality, safety, reliability, and don't want to scream "I spent a lot of money." It is the Banker's Buick of the new millennium. It costs a bit to own but all those qualities in one product should't come cheap.

+1. Wife really wanted the LX for the interior but I couldn't see spending the extra funds for that, plus the relative anonymity of driving a Toyota product is attractive to me.

I would own a G550 instead if it had LC reliability and didn’t burn through gas just looking at it. The new one will drive much better but from what other owners have said “keep aside 5k per year for maintenance, etc”, after warranty.

Agreed on the price as not worth it to purchase the Lexus (to me), others are free to disagree. That's why we have choices.

I did shop the Lexus and after negotiations it was going to be about $8K more with a friends and family deal I got from the dad of one of the kids I coach on my son's basketball team. I also had other reservations in addition to the price and these are my personal taste. First, I did not like the front end on the Lexus 570 as it compromises the approach angle and I personally did not like the looks. Second, the interior was more refined but it also looked to nice to take camping/hunting. Not sure how to put it, but it just looked like a wealthy mom's suv to me. It looked like it would get dirty and not clean up as well. Third, the Lexus dealership I went to all had the rear entertainment TV's, not even sure if it was an option to not have the rear entertainment system on the Lexus, maybe but would have been a special order for me. Forth, it couldn't do anything the LC doesn't do as well. Finally, I also like the fact it doesn't scream I spent a ton of money on this vehicle, even if I did. That is between me and my bank, not the general public.

How did the LX and LC seats compare?

How did the LX and LC seats compare?

I would say the LX seats were more plush, leather seemed of a higher quality but not as durable to me. In terms of comfort, the LC seats were firmer and comfortable to me and my back. The LX were even more comfortable almost like being at home. Was not a decision factor for me. Both would have been fine. Ride was a little smoother in the LX as well.

I never got that far in negotiations; it was about a 15K difference to start so never seriously considered it. The LX handled OK and the suspension options I thought were a plus but I also felt the acceleration lagged somewhat compared to the LC. Also, again as a personal preference, the big ol' grille on the LX was not a feature I was after.

The poor LX sales guy was a young dude and he didn't have permission to scratch his nose much less negotiate. So that was also a bit of a non-starter.

Funny thing is the wife, who is usually pragmatic as far these types of expenditures, fell hard for the LX. She lobbied mightily to get it, even though this will be my truck. Go figure.

I had an LX570 and the air ride drove me crazy, it wasn't broke it just always seemed either to soft or too firm or out of sorts to me. I was constantly changing it's setting to match the conditions I was in.
I had owned a couple LC 200s prior and went back to the LC 200 to get away from the Air ride in the LX, I like how the LC rides and handles so much better IMO then the LX, to me the LC has just as compliant of ride as the LX in soft ride mode, and handles just as good as the LX in firm ride mode.

I am being offered a price of $65k for a 2016 manager's 200 series LC with 10,000 miles driven in CA. I've been told that it would be sold as "new" and have remaining balance of factory warranty. Does this sound like a good price?

Would you buy it at the same price if it was being sold as "used"?

From your description of "remaining balance of factory warranty" that's what Toyota USA thinks of the situation. You can confirm by asking them what the service entry date is. The only possible difference is the slight gain (IMHO) from being an "original" owner.

So they never titled it? Big deal. 10,000 miles is 10,000 miles. You always have the balance of the factory warranty regardless of who you buy it from. Or do they mean for the 3/36 warranty that the three years will start at time of your purchase? In that case you'd have a 3/26 warranty. Personally, I'd rather have them throw in an extended warranty.

As stated, the warranty is irrelivant as you'd get that anyways. The only upside to buying a manager special (that I can think of) is lower price and better financing options. Other than that, you're basically getting a vehicle that was the manager's wife's joyride for a year. If you're ok with that, it's an ok price. If you can get an extended warranty packaged in, that would sweeten the deal.

Really? I may trade my 17 in for 18. I really like the power lift gate and remote starter.
LCs didn't get power lift gates until 2018? Didn't the LX have it since 2008? Holy moly Toyota!

IMO those power gates are a waste. I get them for mini-vans with soccer moms and two handfuls of kids. But I've never found a SUV gate that didn't make me wait.
