Hello esteemed members of MUD. I recently had my timing belt done and a few thousand miles later this persistent noise started.
I thought maybe the AC was going bad but the noise persists even if its turned off.
2006 LC, 191K miles. Any guidance is much appreciated:
I dont have a definite answer for you but yea it could be fan clutch and/or fan bracket if that has never been replaced and perhaps a combination of a pulley also. Let others chime in, but it sounds like a couple things could be causing all that racket.
What is still spinning after you turn off the truck? The belt shouldn't spin if off, but if the clutch is bad, it could. Just ordered one to replace mine, freak accident stripped housings, and the fan fell off the clutch, which was not OEM. If it is the clutch definitely go with the OEM one (AISIN FCT-021 #16210-50051)
Not real common to hear a bad fan clutch make noise if it is going bad. Usually the back side of the clutch will become dirty with dust stuck to oil that is leaking out the seal, and it stops pulling air when it gets hot. If you see dark oily dust on the back, time to replace. Another indication is if you grab the fan fins at 3 and 9 o'clock and try to wiggle the clutch on the fan bracket. Look for movement then. For me the best way to know a fan clutch is bad is after the car has been sitting all night, when it first starts up in the morning, you should hear a loud woosh of air moving due to the fan clutch being locked up. As it idles for 30 seconds or so, the clutch stops pulling air and you hear the engine area get quit.
My guess is you will need to release the drive belt tensioner to loosen the drive belt so you can check every spinning pulley for excessive play and/or grinding noise. Remember that the tensioner is reverse threads. I'm positive there is a U-tube out there how to do it.
First are you going take back to shop that did TB? If take back today!
Sound very much like Vane (power steering) pump. Check level in it's reservoir. Place a flash light behind it, so you see the true level, not just a stain. Top to mid line when cold, with ATF.
Looked like coolant in reservoir very low. Check coolant level under radiator cap, in the AM just before sun-up when engine and OAT coolest. Vehicle must be level or better yet. Parked overnight with front end higher than rear. Top radiator to the very top, than reservoir to high full line. repeat daily until no more needed.
So we can get better idea of what and from where:
Video the fan, fan clutch, pulleys, serp belt and AC compressor clutch all in one shot/view. Hold camera still for 30 seconds on area..
Also video PS reservoir, while engine running. Have some turn steering wheel fully to RH lock and hold 3 seconds, then to fully to LH lock and hold.
Next remove serp belt, test pulleys by hand spinning and fan bracket for up down movement. The start engine, see if sound still present. If so sound from Tine belt (TB) area. Either water pump or a pulley.
My 6 month old remanufactured Denso alternator failed last week and the noise it was making sounded very similar. I thought it was the power steering pump that was failing until I noticed voltage output was low. Just something else to check…
