Oh and I found the answer to my question... Removing the 20amp fuse for the TEMS in the lower dash cured my lights

This guy?

Nope the $60 kit from MT just has a bolt in spring locator, that bolts to the axle. I welded it in instead of bolting it, because I'm gonna instal a set of Firestone airbags inside the coils for towing heavy loads

That is the spring isolator and helper its also a progressive bump stop. That come in the more expensive kit that MT sells

Ok, so confirming - if I get the $60 kit from MetalTech and left/right of the above (at $61/ea) I will effectively have the same thing for less money. :)

Yes
The only reason I didn't get that kit was I'm gonna do the airbags inside the coils so I'd have to remove those spring isolator/cones.

Awesome, thanks. Even after tax I could buy those locally from a Toyota dealer and still save $50+ over the higher end MetalTech kit.

Yeah MT is just making money on convenience, and good for them. They have done the work to put together a kit and source the parts. But yeah if people want to do the work themselves its almost always cheaper.

Do you guys know if the 5th gen 4runner rear springs would work? The vehicle weight is more inline with the GX

Ok, so I am finally getting ready to do this in the next month or so...I spoke with a guy from MetalTech...he told me that the springs from a 2010 4runner will fit the GX. can anyone confirm this. He just didn't sound sure of himself, when I questioned whether they would fit.

they fit. Pretty much any suspension of the same year 4runner will fit your GX

2010 is a 5th Gen 4Runner. Don't know if that works or not as it is same platform as GX460 (150 series). 4th Gen 4Runner up through 2009 is good to go. Maybe it uses same/similar springs?

yes, same stuff

I actually have the StrutMasters kit for the GX470 sitting in my shed.

I didn't like a few things about the kit, so that's why I'm researching doing it with all Toyota OEM Parts.

The kit included; (2) Coil Springs, (2) upper spring retainers, (2) lower spring mounts, and (2) Gabriel shocks

Things I didn't like about the kit;

1. The (2) upper spring retainers and (2) lower spring mounts are basically zinc-plated steel plates with a phenolic donut-type adapter that bolts up in the center of the plates. The phenolic donuts do not fit very snug inside the interior of the spring and have no stop-point to prevent the spring from turning. The lower spring mounts are made to just sit on top of the Air Spring Perch Plate that is welded to the axle and bolt up with one bolt that goes through the centering hole on the factory perch.

2. The system does not have any type of Damper on the upper spring retainer like OEM set ups do. The damper serves as both a cushion and the stop when the spring is fully compressed. These are standard on all OEM set ups and I believe ship with the aftermarket lift kits as well.

I still have all of the components. I can post pics if there's any interest.

So it sounds like the springs from a newer fj cruiser would work in a gx as well in talking about the fj built on the 150 platform. But I've been told that the rear shocks won't bolt up is this true. I have a complete setup from a 2012 fj cruiser but it sounds like I may need to source different rear shocks. Will the front shocks still work?

Any updated information on the best coil-conversion for stock ride height and quality? I noticed metal tech sells some products now.

You could do the FJ springs and then add a internal air spring attached to the old existing compressor. If the compressor/etc fails you still have the FJ spring. You still get load leveling. Essentially the air springs is just barely inflated at stock height. So ride should be about the same as a plan old FJ spring. But you can adjust the height if needed. This is what I would do if I didn't want lift.

Thanks. I ended up ordering a "kit" from Metal Tech that looks like a good way to go. Just crossing my fingers that the ride height is good.

These are the springs metal tech provided. Not very descriptive. I'll try to get this installed in next week. Is it a huge pain to swap springs with KDSS? They suggested I follow a special procedure to release the pressure on the KDSS system. I really don't want to touch it to be honest.
