I'm likely going to buy a softtopper for my '86 4runner that includes their back window panel.
This will make the stock electric roll down/up window redundant, so I'd like to use that space inside the tailgate for some storage cruiser-wagon-style.

has anyone already done something similar?

I don't see the point in carrying a piece of glass in the truck that will never be used again.

I'm thinking about making a hinged plate, similar to the aquala fj40 storage tailgate with some latches or spring clips.
I'd like the contents to be accessible when the soft top is down and folded back too.

Ideas?

I put one of Kevin's tailgate storage lids in my 80 series and really like it. Look under Wagongear in the Vendors Market section or search "tailgate storage" in the 80 or 60 section. He makes them for both and I would think that one or the other would work for your 4Runner.

You might find this thread helpful as well. At least it will give you the dimensions of the factory tailgate vinyl/carpet cover. https://forum.ih8mud.com/79-95-toyota-truck-tech/260316-ott-4runner-tailgate.html

thanks for the reply and the info.

I had read your thread a while back and liked the idea of a solid slab of metal in place of the cardboard/vinyl/carpet.

Sometime after i get the soft top, prob not for another few more months, I'll update this thread with my solution to using the tailgate as some usable storage.
Right now it is all just an idea until i pull the rear glass.
