could be a sensor, i tested them all and they were working.
it is time for someone else to give it a shot ... me, i want to shoot the truck.

Hi crushers, perhaps stupid question.... Did you check the main bearing caps? In the past i had a 2lt with simular complains, after long search found that de main bearing cap nr5 was broken.. Strange swung knocking and irragular misfire ish...

Regards
Mike

nah, there is no knocking at all. great oil pressure. just idles rough and tons of black smoke.

but thanks for the suggestion.

What year is the truck? Just curious if it could come into the states. Would love to have a KZJ78 and ofr the right price I guess I would dive into another of these motors

not a chance, you will need to wait another 10 years
or
bring it in as parts and do a home built

Do you know to what extent the pump was rebuilt, which parts etc?
Was the ECU proven to be good? I know it was repaired ,I was just wondering if it was checked somehow.

unknown
and
unknown
i didn't sub out the rebuilds, the owner supplied them.
sorry.

I was just curious about the rebuild because AFAIK the 1KZ TE pump couldnt be rebuilt except by Toyota.
This was confirmed when I asked 2 separate shops here on behalf of someone in the UK and it was because of the electronic thingy on the pump.
Up until now you took the whole pump to Toyota and they gave you an exchange reconditioned pump for about $2700AUD(the price from my local dealer about 3 years ago).

Recently Ive heard someone in Tasmania and possibly NZ has overcome this problem.
This information relates to the 90 series and Im not sure how much the electronics crosses over to the 70 series 1KZ TE

i beleive it was rebuilt in NZ and shipped over ...

Correction to that.. It was a used in working condition unit shipped from NZ...As requested by owner...;) I helped him buy it and get it shipped....After owner located one.

I think it could be the ECU.. They are hard to diagnose and fix if you don't have the right gear...
The only place I trust is a crowd in Nelson NZ called Anything Electronic.
Most of the NZ ECU's go there with good success rate....They have a test bed for the ecu.....
Anything Electronic, Anything's possible
Its just a bit far away......

Oh well......Drop in a manual pump and go..... Or put in a Chevy V8.....:steer:

i sit corrected.
at no time did i think the supplied pump was faulty as what ever is causing this issue happens with both pumps ...
maybe he will send the ECU over, that is what i suspected. he sent it stateside, they charged him $200+++ to "fix it" and sent it back. it didn't look opened to me. <shrug>

cheers

Is the ECU part of the pump or does it sit separately? The electronic part that Im wondering about sits on the pump.

ECU is in the glove box.....
There are a few valves on the pump... One being the spill valve...

Hey Wayne no worries re pump comments.... I just wanted to set the record straight... I am a picky Virgo.....:):):) and didn't want to mislead anyone....
I don't think there are any places here in NZ that can overhaul and test these pumps.....

Anyhow I don't need to worry anymore, the manual pumps works sweet...
And now I am looking for an old school glow relay timer... Then I can remove that ECU.......

What do they do in NZ when a pump needs to be rebuilt?

Everyone I know just gets a used unit....
So many here now they go used for anything between $300 and $400 bucks NZD...

can you take a 2LTE pump and convert it to manual?
if so, how much?
i have a good 2LTE pump sitting here and if the owner wants we could go down that road.

You need a non electronic pump as the donor....
What they do to keep it all toyota.....
Get a 2LT pump and a 1KZTE pump...(2LTE pump has too small plungers and dist head)
They swap over the distribution head and plungers so it pumps the correct volumes to the injectors..
Then remove the wax thing that changes the timing when cold (not sure why)
Then its run on the test rig and dialed in... (no idea what settings they use trade secret)
So you end up with a hybrid 2LT pump.....
I have heard they are using the Mitsi pumps around the place but there is a bit more stuff to do...

But as your customer has an auto... its gets tricky as you still need the ECU....
Great mod for a manual trans.....
Good mod for an auto if you have the time to play.....

Hi Guys, thanks for all the discussion on this truck. Been offline for a while and getting caught up. From what I gather, the ECU seems to be the untested/unverified variable at this point.

Calvin, is there a way to get a 'known good' ECU for an auto KZJ78? Rather then pull and send mine over and get a fix, I'd rather try to source a unit that is known to work and rule out another variable.

Unless you can find one in a truck thats working and the owner wont mind you swapping it in for a test run..... That would confirm if its ECU related...

I have one in my truck.......Which is about to be borrowed for a day for trouble shooting purposes...I would lend it to you but I am in NZ.....
Bit far to post.....

If you confirm its ECU I am happy to try and locate one here and as a precaution get it seen too by the shop before posting out to you...Costs unknown at this time....

My ECu has just gone to the Dr surgery. Last Sun 1kz cut out. Engine would turn but not start. Found a few burned components on the ecu and should have it back from surgery in a few days. Sincerely hope its just a plug in and play.

I am begining to be a little anti 1kz and mulling an engine swap.
