Can anybody tell me if there is any difference in the injection pump body for a 1HZ with a tacho pickup, vs one without a tacho pickup.

I have had one diesel shop tell me I have to replace the pump if I want a tach, another tell me they can rebuild my pump and add the pickup, and a stealership tell me I should just be able to just screw the pickup into my pump.

I can't see the side of the pump (on the block side) clearly enough to work out if it has a plug in the hole, or if the housing needs to be drilled and tapped.

Can any of you guys who have worked on a few tell me for sure as I would like to know before I start ripping the pump off, if I really need to, or can I just screw the pick up in with the pump in place?

The pump was only rebuilt about 120 000 km ago so I'm not that keen to have it done again if I can avoid it.

The older pumps (pre 98)have a threaded recess where the pick up fits in.
Lets see if I can rustle up a pic ... mmm here it comes.

I dont think the housing will be any different even with the newer ones. They use another method for obtaining a signal but the mounting spot would still be in the casting process

Thats it with the wires coming out. It costs about $200 AUD in oz. Unreliable little fawkers:mad:

EDIT I just went and checked my spare pump and the pickup has a 21mm hex that you may able to undo while the pump stays in place.
The stealership were telling the truth for a change:D

By the way ,if an aussie fuel injection shop tells you they need to rebuild a 1HZ pump to fix the tacho ,I would be giving thema a big miss.

What about installing a flywheel pickup sensor and a tach translator?
Each install has their own complications, but the sensor/translator would be considerably cheaper, and less of a pain if removing the pump is necessary to go OE.
I can not vouch for the reliability of this setup since mine has only been up and running for a few days, but Rosco's comment would suggest that the OE senders are subject to failure.

Easy to do on a 70 as you could use the pick up and tacho from a HJ75 but Scott has a 80 series .
No HJ80s out there that Im aware to get the parts from unless they make them with the FJ100 they talk of on US sites:flipoff2::D

Thanks for all the replies, I'll have a closer look at the pump and let you know how I get on.

I have looked at after market tachs, but they all look like they are after market, if you see what I mean. I have found a GXL dash with the tacho as well as oil pressure gauge and volt meter, and would like to get it working.

From what I can see, the wiring is the same for both, but I will need to change the oil pressure sender for the gauge, and get some sort of signal for the tach, hence the question about the injection pump as the factory wiring is already at the plug but doesn't go from the plug to the pump.

Tiny tach

Buy a tiny tach - tinytach.com, you would need a 4.3mm transducer. I love mine. cheap too.

Ishobie,

Where did you find the 4.3mm transducer? Did you have to custom order it, as I checked their website and dont seem to find such transducer... How much was it?

Im really interested in one for my 3b

regards

You have to call them up, the old guy is very helpful, the 3B may have a different injector line size.

ask redstang410 mudmemeber about his .. I make a pic singnal from the tensioner superrior pulley in his FJ80 to HZJ-80 swap ...

hi everyone...i am running in to a problem...i have the tach in my meter cluster, but as u see the image of my pump...there is no connector or even a hole to insert the pick up connector.....any ideas??

Thanx

I can't see your pump. What model and year are we talking about? Is the pump on\off the engine?

its a 1994VX limited 6cyl inline 1HZ...]

Its an 80 series? Do you know if the pump is the original for this engine? I seem to recall that some bare bones models had no tacho.
Also the later model pumps,98 on,have a different way of getting the tach signal. So Im wondering if someone has put another pump on the engine from a later model,or maybe your whole engine is a transplant.

HI roscoFH73...and thanx for the reply ..very sorry for my late return...anywayz....here in Sudan we literally build the older models due to the cost of customs...so i guess with 5 previous owners....one of them would have changed it....im still doing bits here and there...but its running,,,got all the combination meter running except the rpm....would appreciate if u could help....learning plenty from this site, but still a newbie (rookie)...thanx again

What i have found in the aussie 80s with the barn doors, they didnt have a tacko, and they dont have a hole in the pump housing for the pickup

Many 70 series, even late models, did not have tachs.
The housing of the pump is a generis denso part. You can order one with a tach hole.
The other possibility is to drill and tap the flat surface on your pump. But you need a tach sensor first to figure out the thread. Everything else is there.
Cheers
