1HZ Hard Start at warmer temperatures

- I have a 1994 HZJ80 GX (non-turbo 1HZ) with 380,000 kms on the clock. For reference, I'm based in Kenya, where our best quality diesel is probably not up to par with average diesel elsewhere, but I only buy diesel from reputable, international companies (Shell, Total, etc.)
- When the engine is cold, it starts basically fine - maybe a little hiccup and a short puff of smoke from the exhaust, but basically fine.
- When the engine is warm (if I switch it off and then on again before it completely cools), it takes at least 2 attempts before it finally sputters to life with a bigger puff of smoke (which then promptly disappears).

- My battery is fine. Engine turns, just doesn't fire up properly
- problem continues despite new fuel filter
- I am no mechanic, but my mechanic is struggling to figure this one out.

Do I need to look at servicing/changing my injectors and/or pump? or might it be something completely different?

Thanks in advance

Difficult warm/hot starts can be an indication of a worn out injection pump. I've heard that you can dump cool water on the pump head to cool it down before starting (when engine is warm). If the engine starts easier when the pump is cooled down then the problem is your injection pump.

Get ready for an injection pump rebuild. At 380k , it is lucky to have gone for so long. Basically, when its hot it expands and loses pressure. When its cold it contracts and regains its pressure.
If your mechanic is baffled, he is not much of a mechanic.
Take it to a specialist fuel injection shop.

Thanks all. I'll try the cool water on the injector pump head experiment and see if it works.
I have access to a very good diesel fuel injection workshop, so that might be my next stop.

Thanks again!
