Hello guys, thank you all for your helpful replies. They were a great help in the work through & diagnostics. We have almost got to the bottom of the issues...
The HZJ73 was almost certainly a combination of altitude and disagreeing with US fuel. Ended up using a few additives and dropping altitude a little and the issues have pretty much cleared up. I don't think the injectors have ever been changed (the 73 is at 420,000km) so I think I'll change those soon too, and hope that will make a difference as well.
The HZJ78 is a little more complicated. (incidentally the 78 is at only 140,000km) We think the main issues were a combination of the faulty injectors & the large carbon deposits they left. That, plus the altitude, resulted in the seemingly serious issues! We ended up running it to try to limp it to a mechanic, and it started to run a lot better after about 20 miles, so we're thinking deposits left by the bad injectors. The 78 is running a lot better now, we have travelled about 300 miles. It's still not back to full performance (lacking power, and now kicking out black smoke) but we're hoping it improves with time as the carbon deposits are burned off. We're still in the rockies, but slightly lower than we were, so it may improve as we get below 1500 metres above.
Also, interesting to note @Radd Cruisers reply regarding the K&N filters. Incidentally we have both noticed a lot of oily deposits in the manifold
and we were suspecting the filters. Might be time to change back to regular filters...
Finally, here's a link to our companions blog about our journey across the US & down the Pan America in these two cruisers, for anyone interested in following - Follow The Hound
I'll update if anything else transpires, once again thanks for all your help folks!
