Hey guys,I’m chasing some advice on a ticking noise that’s recently developed in my Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series with a Toyota 1HDT engine.
(VIDEO ATTACHED AT THE BOTTOM)
The Issue
Over the past month, I’ve developed a noticeable ticking noise:
Very loud and obvious at idle
Worse when cold
Slightly quieter when warm, but still definitely there
It’s a new noise — never had this before
The sound:
Not a fast/light tick (like injectors)
More of a consistent mechanical tick
Sounds like it’s coming from the top end
But when underneath the car, it almost sounds like it’s coming from there too — hard to pinpoint exactly
What I’ve Tried So Far
Trying to rule things out step by step:
Replaced exhaust manifold + all gaskets Checked and tightened all manifold bolts
Removed and replaced A/C and alternator belts
Also ran the engine with belts off → noise still there
Replaced intake manifold gaskets
Tried manually increasing fuel while running (no real change)
Used a screwdriver/stethoscope method to locate the noise (still unclear, seems to echo)
Did an oil change ~2000km ago
Additional Info
I know these engines can tick a bit after fresh oil, but this sounds different
I haven’t checked valve clearances / shims yet
I’ve been towing a boat occasionally over the last couple months (nothing heavy)
The ticking developed gradually over that same period
Next Steps (Planned)
I’ve got new big end bearings ready to go in and will be doing those next
Sounds like it’s from the top, but
Also travels and sounds like it’s from underneath
Makes it really hard to confidently diagnose.
I’ve attached a video below for reference.
Any advice, similar experiences, or things I should check before tearing into it would be massively appreciated.
Cheers
