Hey all,

I'm pretty sure the injectors are getting tired in my 90 HDJ81. I'm starting to plan out how I will get them back in order. First off, does anyone have first hand experience with a diesel/injection shop in Winnipeg that is capable of rebuilding the 2-stage injectors? How much will it cost to go this route?

If there is no one in Winnipeg, how long would it take, and how much would it cost to send the injectors to BC for rebuild?

Considering the popularity of the 1HDT in the rest of the world, can reman injectors be found for a reasonable price online?

Is there an option for higher flow injectors for the 1HDT?

Hi,
I've had my 1HD-T injectors rebuilt just very recently. It is not easy to find a shop that is comfortable with the 2 stage injectors, as they require not only the knowledge, but also a special test bench that few shops have.
I've had new nozzles fit (original denso), and both stages recalibrated, and of course everything cleaned. It ran me 625$ and took 5 days, as the nozzles had to be ordered. The shop is in Los Angeles though (BECS pacific: BECS Pacific - Diesel Fuel Injection and Diesel Turbo Chargers). I mailed the injectors overnight, they fixed them and mailed them back overnight (with new seats, O rings and the 12 copper washers for the return line).

No idea about winnipeg.

You can get reman injectors off ebay australia, but usually they are an exchange item. You can likely have them send with a deposit, and they'll give you the deposit back when you sent them your old ones.

You can get new injectors (contact Akella here, or Dave Steadman at japan4x4, and they will run you about $250 each.

The injectors are flow matched to pump and cylinders, and calibrated for optimal atomization for a certain cylinder size, so in my opinion, there is nothing like a high flow injector, but I'd like to hear other's opinions about that.
cheers,
jan

What were your symptoms before getting the injectors done? Big difference afterward?

No real symptoms beforehand, they were just very high milage. The outcome was a substantial power gain and I could turn the fuel down without losing power.

VW TDI has 2 stage injectors

The early VW TDI engines used 2 stage injectors (up to 2003). Wouldn't any shop capable of pop testing VW injectors be able to theoretically test ours too?

Probably. However, what I discovered is that you have to specifically ask whether they can do that. Pretty much any shop I called at first said "no problem, just send the injectors". Then after asking about the 2 stages, they would counter with "Oh no, we don't have that equipment. We just fit new nozzles and clean them".
So make sure they know how to deal with a 2 stage injector.
The shop I mentioned above claims to be the only one in southern California to have the correct equipment (I cannot verify that) and they were great to deal with. They actually asked to send the printout of the relevant FSM pages with the injectors, to have the exact specs for the 1HDT, which was reassuring. If you are interested in them, call and get Aanto or David on the phone.

Where are you located Jan? I have visions of my injectors being held up in customs for weeks while my truck sits in the garage waiting, lol.

I am in Southern California, San Diego.
I am sure you have good options in Canada, there were a bunch discussed in previous threads in the Vancouver area.

Ian,

Ever deal with Western Turbo near the airport?

They told me they could do them when I was in there a couple of years ago. I never mentioned they were 2 stage.

Not personally, but I have many friends that have, few with complimentary things to say. I think the consensus is a few days of downtime is a better alternative to using them.:meh:

Basically unless you have a domestic truck or highway tractor, they are not the place to go.

A new twist! I was doing some reading on another forum, and came across this post regarding 1HD-T injectors:

"I can now confirm:

1) 1HD-T injectors are two stage
2) 1HD-T injectors have 3 different capsules used and are dependent on the pump part number. If you have had an exchange set before, it is possible they are not matched to the pump."

Has anyone heard of this before? Could complicate matters...

Now that you mentioned it, I remember Raj of Fred Holmes Injection asking me about my pump model (not S/N) before I sent the injectors for rebuild. It was on a small nameplate on the side of the pump if I remember correctly.

FWIW, I had mine rebuilt with Fred Holmes in Surrey, BC. I sent them the injectors and 3-4 days later I had them back in my hand. They did good work, no problems so far (2 years now)..

How much did they charge you?

I'm pretty sure that's where everyone gets theirs rebuilt around here, or ATEB sends them there to the best of my knowledge.

Are they not in Richmond?
