I (think) its getting time for me to inspect/adjust valve clearances on my HDJ81 but the more I research, the more discrepancy I find for a reasonable interval to check them, with opinions anywhere from 20K to 100K km

It seems that most find the 20,000 km recommended interval to be overkill.

How often do you guys go in there, and what have you found for out of spec? I am currently at 50,000 km since last adjustment.

Cheers!

Where are you guys getting shims from? I'm sure mine have never been checked, and I'm just over 100K kms.

Edit: I guess the more important question is, are you ordering a "sample pack" of shims, or taking your measurements, ordering what you need, and then opening it up again to replace any that need adjustment, or what?

I opened it up, measured, ordered, reassembled. Took maybe a week start to finish.

Radd Cruisers has any size shim you could ever need.

Radd has them or you can order from Toyota or Yan.

I initially measured mine and got a catalogue on what was where. I swapped what I could and ordered the ones I needed.

I keep an excel sheet on what was where and what shims I have. Next time I will just be able to use a feeler gauge as I have all the previous data. If I was short a shim I would change it out as soon as it came in as the tolerances are already measured

Thanks for the input guys,

I think I will run it until spring, then get in there. It does not sound like many have found out of spec below 60K km's. I have to say, this area is +1 for a pushrod/cam-in-block engine with adjustable rocker arms

I did basically the same as forealboreal.

On an engine with 330k km (130k km since I owned it), after mix and match, I needed 5 new ones.

My local Toyota dealer in Oz told me they had never sold any and couldn't get them!? Useless plebs!

Cheapest shims from amayama.com. It is rare you need anything over 2.85, when you get thinner the wear on the valves seats may eventually exceed spec- then you would need a new head.

for north american owners, ENS has them in stock for $14 CDN each and short shipping time. Only 5-7 are available in the US market dealers (maybe less now). Amayama in UAE has them for under $4 each plus freight.

40,000km seems to be the expected interval.

I just ordered the shim removal tool and plan on doing this soon!

You can get shims from partsouq and they show up super quick.

I did this on my 4runner last year - opened up and took measurements, ordered applicable shims and a week later they showed up. Just means a week of downtime on the truck assuming you don't want to take apart - put back together twice.
