1HD-T Starter Motor

The starter motor in my HDJ81 decided to destroy itself last week. The housing, gears, etc are still good, but the motor needs to be replaced.

At this point I'd like to convert the starter to 12V as I no longer winter drive the truck, but I'm having a bit of trouble tracking down a part number for a motor I can actually get. Normally I would go to Akella for this, but he hasn't returned my emails or PM's.

In my searching it seems some people are going with 2LTE motors and some are going with the motor from a BJ60, but I have yet to find anything concrete regarding what I do and do not need from a donor.

Information from someone who has already gone through this would be appreciated!

I just used a bj70 starter on and hdj81 starter frame. It went together just fine but I still need to prove it has the umph to spin it.

I imagine that's the same motor used on a BJ60, only 24V. Did you have to relocate the drain tube?

The 12v armature's part number is 28160-47040. They are all 2.5kw if they share the 28160-47040 part number.
It has a huge cross reference list. Other diesels in the toyota range using this armature are C , L ,B, H ,HZ etc.
Many of the engines have 1kw 2kw and 2.5kw armatures in the same model depending on market.

I heard back from Akella and there is a 3.0kw 12v starter available, but the motor is not available separately. This is probably the route I will take, and then I will source a used motor for the starter I have now to keep it as a spare.

Yeah it's quite expensive, but I can't bump start this truck being that it's an automatic. I really don't want to be stranded by a starter again.

$160 starter on ebay. A friend bought one and looks like factory. Chi com probably but the price is decent. Parts can be saved from old starter.....

Adding and isolating a battery is a pain with the 24v starter. I have a Webasto so starting even on the coldest days shouldn't present a problem.

Jump starting is also a chore with the 12/24 switching system.

There is some good starters out there made in Malaysia and Taiwan. My auto electrician says the quality is identical to the OEM.
But whats a starter from australia going to cost in postage?

Its probably the starter from a Coaster bus with the NO4C Hino engine ,similar to a 15BFTE,part number for the starter 28100-78150
There is also a 2.7kw starter on the V8 diesel. IMO ,2.5kw serves it purpose. It spins the engine around as fast as you need to.

New starter is in and working well. I'll have to do some rewiring in the spring, but I can start and move it.

It doesn't crank like the 4.5kw 24v starter did, but had no issues starting it after sitting for a few weeks.

I went with the Bosch 2.5kw. It was less than 1/2 the price of a new OEM starter and as far as I can tell (I opened it up to see) the quality is identical to the OEM one I fried.

I'm still planning to source a new 12v motor for the original starter to keep as a spare.
