Assuming you're running additive. After warming up to operating temp (usually 76C) then parking, my coolant temp gauge will read 20C after 2 hours. So after 7 hours of daylight sun, it might keep above -5C? When my coolant temp dips below -5, I know it will be a hard start (on 12V). Also, if you're running a catch can, I've found frozen water from vapor. That may contribute as well? Especially if there's no pressure relief....

Diesel heaters are expensive toys. Couldn't survive winter without one though. The whole engine is heated, including oil and tranny (if you point the exhaust correctly). My coolant will read +35C in under 40 mins at -25C. Will heat to +45C in an hour. And you can heat rum on it too!

Yep, Stanadyne. I have a recirculating coolant heater (in line) but it doesn't seem to have any effect on this hard start issue. The truck does seem to warm up slightly faster afterward, but no effect on this actual problem.

I've purchased new fuel hose and stainless clamps and will install them tonight. I expect tomorrow morn will be the same temp, so I'll report back what happens.

Where else in the fuel system is there a soft (rubber) line that I can look at?

thx

So, results from this morning. Last night I swapped both soft hoses with brand new fuel line. (Firewall to Filter, Filter to IP). Primed it up, parked it in my driveway, connected the coolant heater and left it overnight.

This morning it started without problem (about 2 seconds of cranking). Idled a bit low, so I pulled my hand throttle to 1,100 rpm and went inside to get ready for work. About 3 minutes later, I could hear the truck idle slowly dropping and running rough.

Went outside about 8 mins later. Let my hand throttle out, dropped to about 500 rpm, rough-ish. I could hear something whining, it sounded like a turbo. Popped the hood, physically pumped the hand pump on the filter, idle and sound got better and stayed better. Drove away without a problem about 2 mins later.

So are you thinking you have an air leak somewhere still? Filter element is screwed on tightly? Possible bad filter housing/hand pump assembly?

IanB he did that last winter.

I told him to give Yotahead a shout, I know since I got my injectors done it starts way better, too bad he wasn't around years ago when I got my pump done!

Update from this morning. Look what I found...

Going back outside now to put some more clear line between the firewall and the filter housing to see if that's where it's leaking from. Assuming it is... has anyone done a rebuild thread on the filter housing?

EDIT: I put two pieces of clear hose... it's harder to tell now because everything has warmed up, but I cannot see ANY air coming INTO the filter assembly. Only coming out.

What ID clear hose did you use for this? Time for a (another?) new filter housing?

Edit: I know I asked already, but are you sure the filter is screwed on tightly, even after the temps dropped? Could be something really simple like that...

That's what I was thinking.... Does anyone know how much that "heater" helps?

1/2 inch ID clear poly hose from Princess Auto. Broke the bank at $0.33/foot. I'm only leaving it in there until I fix this issue :)

I am pretty sure, but I'll check again just to be double sure. Worth taking it right off and screwing it back on? Or just try to tighten.

I'd like to keep the fuel heater if I can. I'll check with Akella to see how much a new assembly is.
