Hi all,
Tried searching around for this but haven't had any luck ...

The air conditioner on my 91 HDJ81 (1HD-T) is fried and has been for awhile but with it heating up I figure it is now time for me to fix it.

Obviously finding parts on a HDT locally (Canada) is tough so I was wondering if anyone knows of another Toyo that uses the same A/C unit as uses on the 1HD-T? I tried a couple different ones on Toyodiy but its kinda a wild goose chase...

Hopefully if I get a list I can find a replacement at the wreckers. If not, I guess I will try and shell out $$$ for a new one.

Thanks!

Not that I can really be of any help but what's "fried"?

Toyota dont show a cross reference, but Denso who make the compressor(we are talking compressors are'nt we?) may be able to match it up with another one.

Is the compressor shot or is it the aircon clutch seized, easliy fixable.

part number for your compressor 88320-60540

I found a Cressida compressor that matched my FJ73 compressor,it had to have some parts of the old compressor swapped over to the new one.

Spurcap,
Where are you located?

My AC on my HDJ81 was dead and Proactive Auto here in Calgary (staffed by all former Toyota mechanics) sourced and found various pieces to fix it.

They have access and know the workarounds to source out the JDM parts without much hassle.

If you know what you need and want to fix it yourself, you could call them and get them to order the parts for you.

Just my 2 cents.

Craig.

Thanks all. I am actually not sure what is wrong with it - the PO removed the unit when I bought the truck since it had siezed up and melted his accessory belt. I haven't had a chance to look but if not too expensive I figured I would just replace the whole compressor unit.

It could easily be the clutch based on the symptoms the PO noted. Mentioned above that its easily fixable ... does that mean easy to get parts or easy in terms of labor? Or both?

From what I can see ,only the HZJ80 is a straight swap. If you click on the link for FJ80,FZJ80 it will give you more diesel models
If you go to the parts diagrams, the FJ80 for example ,has the part number 88320-60320 for its compressor.

It may only be the front part that is different.I also know that the HZJ7* compressor is not a straight swap onto HZJ80 ,because the pulleys on the compressor do not align with the crank pulleys and idler.

This doesn't make sense. The AC compressor has it's own belt that drives no other accessories. In other words, you can remove the AC belt and leave the compressor in place without anything else "not working".

Agreed - but it was seized and started burning his belt so he took the belt off. I assume he then took off the compressor to get it fixed but either never got around to it or decided it was too costly to do (especially since I bought the truck in the winter).

Just looking on Toyodiy and see as you note:
- FJ80 compressor is 88320-60320, clutch assembly is 88410-60200
- HDJ81 compressor is 88320-60340, clutch assembly 88410-35120

Therefore not interchangable (as you said).

Does HZJ80 help me at all? I wouldn't find one in North America anyway, right?

I was hoping someone would tell me its the same p/n's as a Corolla or something but obviously that was wishful.

Assuming I need to buy parts new, any idea how to find out if its the clutch or the compressor that's the problem?

Here is a solution:
Measure total length of Comp and clutch and take a picture if needed, better yet lay a tape measure beside while taking the shot. Go to ebay and find a shop which repairs/warranties their service, call them and have them match it up.

Mine cost $145.00 from the US...pretty good price and still works.

Something funny here because I used my 93FZJ clutch to test the 19901hdt comp.

My compressor seized last fall, I have found on this forum that some compressors from mid 90's 4runners apparently bolt up to our 1hdts, i havn't explored this option because i have no time and i live in kind of a twilght zone on the north coast where nothing is local.:deadhorse:

Good thread! Thanks.

After reading I looked up the clutch assembly HDJ81 P/N on Titus-Will Toyota's parts search and I can get the OEM one for $190.

If it is just the clutch thats not a bad deal ...

I guess I need to figure out what's the problem with the A/C (compressor or clutch) now to get started ... I guess that would likely require me going to a shop in which case I might as well just get them to fix.

Maybe ill check out the guy in AZ from the posted link.

As I mentioned earlier,a Denso specialist might be the best one to ask.
Its still possible something else out there will have the same compressor unit.
It may or may not be a Toyota.
There are items in the parts list that do not share the same part number but ARE interchangeable.
A HZJ80 will work if you can find one.

The compressor will have a some kind of number like 10PA17C(this is a John Deere denso compressor).
Find the number on yours and google it

The Denso compressors in australia are about half the price of the dealer if you can source them through a denso dealer.

All,
Looking for some clarification on an older thread. I have a 1993 HDJ81, and the clutch is wobbling and screeching.

Toyota Part # from is 88320-60340 (ToyoDIY). I've alternately on threads here seen this as a Denso replacement part # 10PA17C or 10PA15C. Any feedback?
