A couple of days ago, the A/C seems to be making some noise regardless if the clutch is on or off. Sounds like a belt or bearing noise from the pulley area (confirmed with a stethoscope) I was wondering if there is a bearing to replace there or should I replace the whole clutch assembly? The clutch works fine and does engage/disengage as needed. I also noticed some signs of grease leaking from around the pulley.
I will post this in the 80's forum too, may get some replies there (I think it is the same compressor in the FZJ, No?)
Cheers,

Removed the clutch assembly today and found that the bearing is toast. In addition, the clutch plates seem so worn out (even though the A/C was working O.K.'ish'). I guess I will need to buy a whole clutch assembly.
Checked the EPC and found this part number: 88410-35120
It is a 1990 HDJ81. I was just double checking if this P/N includes the pressure plate AND the rotor w/bearing.
Also, any idea where to find it in Canada? I could always buy it from the US dealers online but hate to wait for the shipment to show up here. It is bloody hot these days..need AC now!!

Cheers,

l have replaced 2 compressor on HDJ81s with the one from FJ60/62,they are the same.

I have the clutch assembly of my old compressor,it was still working fine just not the compressor. I can mail it to you if you still need it. I also have the information on the ebay seller I bought my replacement off.

Thanks "railswitcher" for the offer.
I just bought a clutch assembly online. a Toyota OEM. Received it last week and installed it and the A/C is back in business.
But, I do appreciate your kind offer. Who knows if the problem ends up somewhere else, I may take you up on it.

Hey Cancruiser,

Where did you find your a/c parts online?
I need to replace the compressor in my HDJ81 and keeping the order in Canada would be great.

Thanks,

I only bought the clutch assembly, that's all I really needed. I got it from 1sttoyota.com
But, if you need to replace the whole compressor. I read that the compressor units off '92 to '95 Mazda MPVs bolt right in place of the HDJ81 compressor and have the right pulley offset for the belt (just a difference of 1~2 mm). It is a Denso unit just like the OEM but it is the 17 series which is better than the 15 series currently in the HDJ81. I have not installed one myself since my compressor still fine, but you may want to check it out, probably easier than sourcing an original HDJ81 compressor here.
If you decide to go that route, you could also buy a seal kit (o-rings) and replace the seals before you install it in your truck just to be sure. You can buy the seals from Rex here:
CoolStream
Rex is a member on MUD and knows exactly what to send. Never dealt with him, but he has numerous posts and videos in the 80's section regarding Land Cruiser A/C's.
If you decide to replace your compressor with exact same unit, send a picture of the current unit to Rex and he can source a refurbished original. His MUD id is "1972FJ55"
Hope this helps..

Thanks CanCruiser!!

That wil make it much easier to find the compressor. I'll also take a look at the seal kit.

Cheers!
