That’s wild - you’re getting up to temp, then cooling off while idling. I wonder if this is when the FTE ecu would be kicking on the intake heater screen.

I think that's only on starting, I'm not sure. it's odd, Later on, on the way home it stayed around 160, I idled in the grocery store parking lot waiting on groceries and it stayed at 160. I'm going to see how it does throughout the winter and go from there.

I thought that was basically just a substitute for glow plugs.

That seems way too cold, even for cold weather, To the point where it's a concern because you're never boiling off condensation in the crankcase.

Thanks for the input, im going on a longer road trip and will see how it does. Most of this is from around town driving.

Ill also take my heat gun to make sure the gauge is semi accurate.

Remind me, is the hotter side of the radiator typically the top or bottom?

@Marvelicious is think as its base function yes, but doing some reading across the internet, it seems the ecu may use it at other times as well for emissions and in conjunction with the EGR if equipped.

This is anecdotal, and I don’t know exactly how else the ecu uses it. I’d be curious to see exactly when the ecu kicks it on.

Looks like top side should be hot since bottom returns to the engine

Probably time to go ahead and order a fan clutch and thermostat just to make sure.
There are tests to see if the fan clutch is seized. I think we can assume based on the details that it's either functioning normally or seized. When you fire it up, does it roar for a minute or two, then calm down? Also, with the engine off and cold, you should be able to grab a blade and move it freely... it'll feel like there's some resistance, but you should be able to move it around without any real effort, and it'll stay where you moved it to.

My money is on thermostat, but it's just a guess at this point.

I was able to find the thermostat and gasket through a local Toyota dealership, looks like Cruiser outfitters might have a fan clutch.

Maybe I'm just being cheap, but I'd go out, pop the hood and see how that fan moves before I did anything else. if it seems fine, try the thermostat. If not, order the clutch.

Oh yeah, fan clutch feels fine. I only ordered the thermostat with gasket for now. Hopefully its just a 25.00 dollar fix.

Fingers crossed. Lol.

I took the 80 for a shakedown run after bypassing the rear heater this weekend. It did awesome - the broad torque band of the diesel is lovely for trails.

I did 397 miles round trip, cruising at around 70mph, on a single tank of fuel. The math came to 19.77mpg, corrected for gearing and tire size, including those miles on the trails. My guess is that I’ll see low 20’s when just cruising highways and trails aren’t on the menu. I’ll take that.

Two clips from yesterday are below, turn the sound up! 🤠

Your exhaust sounds so much better than mine! LOL. I'm going to have to go true straight pipe.
It’s no straight pipe, this system has what some call the “hotdog” muffler. Very happy with it though

Ive known them as cherry bombs lmfao. Might have to revisit an exhaust shop soon, how does it sound on the highway?

No drone on the highway at all. For the most part I don’t hear it all that much in the cabin, mostly engine noise through the firewall.

I’ll try to grab a video soon, I do love the way it sounds. Like a little Cummins almost.

Haha I recently straight piped mine. Love it. Much better than with the muffler. I hear it when I get on it at slower speeds, can hardly hear it in the cab at highways speeds.

Oh man, we are going to need some videos of that over in your build thread.

@MooseMichaels

Very well done brother, she looks neat as. I've just read the entire the entire thread and it's seriously giving me the itch to go and build myself my dream FTE 80.

Also, I'm probably speaking for at least a few people out there, but massive kudos to you for sharing and documenting your experience.

Out of curiosity:
- How did you handle the immobilizer on the FTE ECU or was yours not immobilized?
- You mentioned installing a plug for a Unichip. Did you ever get the truck tuned or are you still rocking the OEM tune?

Cheers
