hello guys will be doing my valve cover gasket tomarrow, i looked all in the FSM but could not find the torque spec for the bolts. any idea what the torque spec is? also for the throttle body, anybody have the torque spec for that? thanks guys.

The valve cover spec is not easily found in the FSM like the other torque specs but has been posted on here before, a search should turn up that information. It is very low, in the tens of inch-lbs.

i did a search and found somebody else asking the same question and they did not get a answer and somebody else had a thread about breaking the valve cover bolts  i hopefully there is some torque spec out there. i hope.

THINK it's around 11. Soi finger tight then quarter turn.

Others have suggested using a screwdriver handle type nut driver (so you don't overtorque the bolts) and stop when the raised nibs on the valve cover lip comes in contact with the head. The numbers I recall from previous threads on the subject were very low, something like ? 4-6 ft lbs.

thanks for all the replys. i will use my inch pound torque wrench 3/8 drive so i dont over torque it. i guess just enough to squish the gasket a bit? any idea on the throttle body torque? i looked at the FSM again and did not find a spec.

Start from the center out and tightening by hand. Then work your way around. Some of us like to use Vaseline or FIPG to hold the VC gasket in place.

hmm...I didn't have any luck finding the post I was looking for.

After reading this post, I think 48 in-lb is the number that I used. I was feeling a twinge of OCD, so I used a criss-cross pattern and tightened in multiple passes. :hillbilly:

This photo is a bit small, maybe magnify on your pc to see better??

^^ i spent all day today trying to track down that little tiny bulb for the D indicator on the instument cluster, until i found a dealer that stocked it i barely had enough time to put the dash and all that togethor. i might start on the valve cover sunday. but i wanted to check my valve clearance, clean TB, and IAC, new o ring for the distributer, wires, plugs, cap, rotor, maybe paint the center plug cover black? so yea that will be a whole day of work, i just need to find sometime to do it. anybody have a torque spec for the throttle body?

^^^ oh hey thanks alot man, i p'md ya about that diode, then i received the one that was sent to me an hour later in the mail. all the local toyota dealers did not have the bulb, i drove to frontier toyota in valencia to get it and they only had 3 left, i bought all 3.

Man the amount of effort put into this... I don't think you could even effectively fit a torque wrench on some of the bolts. And I don't understand how torque-wrench addicts even get any work done, seems like you'd spend all day clicking the wrench for all these trivial fasteners.

I just turned them on by hand in a one by one down the line to what felt good. I would estimate about 8 ft-lbs.

The worst thing that happens if they're a little loose is that you notice some oil and you retighten the appropriate bolts.
