The instrument cluster in my US 1999 LX 470 is pretty close to shot - water temp and oil pressure have never worked under my ownership, and battery/fuel are giving out. Looking to buy another used unit to ship to Tanin for a complete rebuild, but before I drop $$$$, just wanted to confirm that 1998-99 LX 470 clusters are interchangeable/plug and play without the need for extra programming/calibration/anything else.

I was under the impression that it's just a direct swap without programming, but when I called Tanin, they said that I wouldn't need to get it ECU coded if I sent them the unit that's currently in my vehicle. I'm assuming that's just a thing with later trucks?

My part number is 83800-6A850 - seems like there's also a 83800-6A851, not sure what the differences are, but I'll prioritize getting a unit ending in 50 just to make sure.

Not that I think it matters, but the cluster I'm swapping out is likely the 2nd or 3rd one that's been in the vehicle. Odometer was rolled back at some point 15-20 years ago, previous owner discovered some tampering with the cluster a few years later, and ended up swapping in a junkyard unit, and this junkyard cluster is the one I want to replace. Feels like there's some kind of curse.

From my understanding (though I've never swapped my instrument cluster), 98-02 LX's are all compatible. You can throw in any good cluster from those years and it'll work. However, the odometer reading will be from the donor cluster. Online shops can reprogram to the "correct" reading of your choice for a modest fee. There are plenty of good clusters on the used market. I would go that direction unless you were trying to modify the cluster.

Odometer is already incorrect on the current cluster so that'll get fixed regardless. My main concern with an 00-02 cluster is that the bulbs/warnings might be different - I added a locking rear diff so I want to make sure that icon doesn't go away on the 00-02s (IIRC you could not get an AHC truck with rear diff locker anywhere in the world after 99), and I don't have ATRAC and the other fancy stability control features introduced for the 2000 MY.
