For under hood lights, lift the hood and the lights come on. This is an OEM part by the way with a little custom flavor added. 😉

That catch can just look nice, not my words. But the famous study from Curtin University comparing 12 catch cans proves that. The filtration is very poor of the HPD catch can, the best in this study is the Manns-Hummel / Flashlube design.

Like all things - a lot of thought was given to this selection. A good majority of new Aussie diesels get the Manns units. But they are fitted with pretty stringent emission control devices that require a super high level of filtration. This engine is not running the EGR emission related components. It seems the vast majority of EGR deleted FTE’s are either running no catch can or some minimal “home brew” setup.

In my however many thousands of kms owning and driving a 1HD-FTE, I never once filled up the catch can. The 1VD-FTV on the other hand, spews oil like you wouldn't believe, I've seen a healthy 1VD put 100mm in the catch can between scheduled services.

The exhaust is en route to @SNLC as of now. That was pretty much the last part of the equation. There should be a lot of progress in the next four weeks. The center console and some engine bay items are having cerakote applied this week. Should have those back at any time. Those - plus the exhaust - are really the only items not in hand.

Yeah the VD seems to be a heavy breather. I used to get acouple of hundred ml every 5000km

I have ran the HPD catch can in several diesels, it works well from my experience. It is also super nice and has a dipstick. I don’t care for any catch can with a filter type setup. From experience I have found them to clog easy which can over pressure in the crank case. The HPD has layers of screens which is exactly what you want to catch the oil that is vaporized and thus turn it to do droplets which fall/drip to the bottom of the catch can.

Any ways, here are some pics of details. The brackets for the light bar we fabbed up to suit our desired mounting location.

Friday evening news dump. Lots of good stuff today. A lot of thought recently has gone into accessory mounts etc. I have an Icom radio and we are utilizing the Switch Pro for some accessories. I just did not want these items sticking out and cluttering up the dash. Ian and Chris came up with a really nice setup to install inside the top of the center console. Very clean look and I can still drop pens inside and they won’t roll under the displays.

A number of items were dropped off for cerakote this week and they turned out really nice. The finish is so clean and smooth. This air box - along with some various engine brackets came out fantastic.

The shifter console is really absorbing the finish so there will be another week before it’s complete. It’s really coming together.

So this is the first time in my shop we have done any Cerakoting. I was not very familiar with it prior to this.

From what I have learned it doesn’t like UV, it will fade and perhaps quickly. Besides this is is a bomber coating. Often used on firearms. You also see it on say high end stainless steel water bottles like a Yeti.

It is much thinner than powder coat. It is ceramic based but is not the same as say ceramic coating used on exhaust manifolds or exhaust components. It comes in many many colors. It also comes in air dry and bake. We are baking on all these items vs air dry. A number of the lines of this coating are aimed at heat transfer, just like other ceramic coatings.

It is comparable price wise with powder coat. It can be used on plastics unlike powder coat. I am super impressed with it, I would say it takes more prep than powder coat because it is thinner, much thinner. However it is absolutely smooth as butter and is supposed to be extremely tough and durable.

We had some clear done on aluminum in this same batch that is suited for high temps. I will post some pics of that in another build thread the parts are for.

Very cool coating though and I am stoked John wanted to give it a try. I am seeing it as far better on plastics than say paint/dye.

Cheers

that's a very nice air box , how is the water drain solved in it if I can ask?

When we got the FTE running we made a check list for what needed to be done to finish the project. It was three pages. We been banging out things since and crossing them off the list.

Under hood lights all done and I am real happy with it.
