It's a long story, but the short of it is the right thing for me to do is exchange the Troopie for a vehicle more appropriate for comfortably transporting an elderly person around in. (This doesn't mean I need a Grand Marquis or a Sprinter with a wheelchair lift, just a comfy car that I wouldn't mind DD'ing around town.)

Price adjustment: $18,000.

The truck:

  • 1994 Toyota Land Cruiser 75 series Troop Carrier
  • 1HZ inline 6 cylinder naturally aspirated diesel
  • H55 5 speed manual transmission
  • Factory Limited Slip rear axle
  • Leaf springs all around and they appear to have a 2in lift over stock
  • Factory snorkle with OEM head. I also have a donaldson 10" for it.
  • National Luna dual battery setup with 2 Odyssey batteries up front and a group 31 Sears/Odyssey battery in the rear.
  • Custom fuse box in rear
  • Pioneer cd player with aux input
  • 4 custom bucket seats with custom frames/mounts by Safari Pacific, this allows a pass through from the front to the back of the rig. Also gives stadium style seating to the rear folks so they can see out the front & sides easily. The middle row is currently removed to facilitate my sleeping platform, but will be included and can be easily reinstalled.
  • Triple layer soundproof & insulation done to floor/roof/walls
  • Custom rear storage
  • Custom rear bumper with swingout for the tire (The propane tank is no longer on that, I trimmed it down to just the tire. Pic forthcoming, but it's pretty easy to imagine)
  • 3 Rigid LED light bars, 2x6in & 1x10in
  • 33×10.5x15in BFG AT’s
Current mileage is about 503k km (315,000 miles) and it runs like a champ. I drive this more than my 80, mostly because of the dumb grin I get on my face when I do.

In addition to the slough of work completed on this truck before I purchased it just a few short months ago, I have:

  • Had a new head gasket installed by Torfab (Toyota Off-Road Fabrication | Home)
  • Installed 2 new Sylvania headlights - much nicer than stock
  • Installed new OEM weather stripping on the front doors
  • Replaced the clutch master cylinder
  • Fitted an interior rear door panel with cutout for storage
  • Installed New Front/Rear springs (OME Dakar 2.5" Lift Springs)
  • Installed a New Steering Dampener
  • Integrated a/SuperWinch 8500# Winch + Viking Synthetic Line into the bumper... nice and clean.

Vehicle is located near Tacoma, WA.

This vehicle is titled and registered in WA state. The title specifically states that it is a Diesel.

Here's the thread I started on it. Not a build thread, but has some pics and info: https://forum.ih8mud.com/wa-south-sound-cruisers/542661-new-cruiser-warning-troopie-content.html

Here's the ad I picked this baby up from. Lance was a heck of a seller and the truck is still full of spare parts he compiled, waiting to be bolted on. This also has a little more background on the truck: https://forum.ih8mud.com/vehicles-t...-series-troopcarrier-diesel-5sp-18-000-a.html

Here is the gallery that 1leglance had up, transferred to my picasa: https://picasaweb.google.com/109725376440203109478/Troopy

New gallery showing the rust, the underside, and some updated pictures of her with new wheels/tires: https://picasaweb.google.com/109725376440203109478/UpdatedTroopiePIcs?authuser=0&feat=directlink

And I'll attach a bunch of my more recent pictures...

For the "where did this truck come from" questionsl, I actually met with the original PO (prior to 1leglance) in Miami a year or two ago when I was originally looking at this truck.

IIRC it was a vehicle that was originally registered under a diplomatic title, and at some point it was registered in Florida under a normal title. The guy who originally sold it has brought on some really nice diesel 70 and 80 series trucks.

My '97 was brought into the fold the same way, by the same guy. Mine has been registered in FL, CA, and NC with no drama from the DMV yet.

Pretty much exactly the same way my Oz-spec '99 105 came into the country. The diplomatic exemptions are not well-known . . . except by the diplomats!;)

Thanks for the info, gents.

Have replied to PM's and e-mails. I've camped almost every weekend since mid June and have really refined my kit down to fit the vehicle... between the dog and I, a chair, my backpack, and a modest pelican case with cooking supplies along with a duffel of recovery gear all tucked into the storage boxes in the rear seem to be the ticket. I could probably live out of this truck :)

I'm taking the old girl out this weekend through Eastern Washington for a few days of camping and exploring with other cruiser folks. Definitely looking forward to it!

If I get a chance, I might add an extra leaf or two to the front packs to level it out with the new winch installed and combat the remaining bit of cruiser lean. The OME mediums are beginning to settle and are an amazing improvement on ride quality over the old ones.

**EDIT: I threw an extra leaf in the front drivers side pack to level things out. We'll see how it looks after this weekend, but so far so good! Also removed the front flares today as they were cracked and I didn't want them concealing potential rust. The metal looks good underneath. **

Been having crazy thoughts about selling the 80 and keeping this as my sole vehicle... :hhmm:

A few shots from our cruiser trip a few weekends ago, courtesy of snowboardonsnow (Kyle):

(disregard the ghetto license plate position, it's on the bumper now :))

Just got back from a long weekend out to eastern WA with some mudders. We did about 515 miles of driving that began Thursday night and ended with me parking the troopie Sunday evening.

She got around 17 mpg (mixed highway/offroad driving) and performed flawlessly. I noticed it started getting a bit hard to steer last week before I took off, and am thinking it might be time for a new PS pump.

Love this rig. I've been looking for an earlier HJ 47 but this would probably be a better bet when you boil it all down! Thanks for sharing the pics...

Thanks, it's a really fun rig. Plans for the next few weeks include taking a good look at why my Power Steering isn't quite so powerful and throwing an extra leaf in my right-rear leaf pack to accommodate the additional weight of the spare tire and fridge.

All correspondences have been replied to.

So does this mean it was once a US State Department truck? I only ask because I am in Afghanistan and the whole FOB is getting brand new HZJ78 troopys. I noticed some State Department or Diplomatic stickers in the doorjamb. These trucks will live an easy life on the FOB and with the war winding down may be soon available if that is the same channels yours came in under. I'd give a kidney for one of those

I doubt it... the 76's and 78's we had in Iraq were all brand new.

Being a '94, I'm assuming the guy that brought it in merely had the type of connections to get it diplomatically titled down in Florida.

Law school applications are going in over the next 2 months... looking harder at cash offers if anyone is interested. I've had some intriguing interest from a party looking to purchase within the next year, but nothing firm yet.

Just rolled 511k this morning and I'll be on the road (living out of the troopie!) with family for the next 2 weeks.

What kind of Highway worthiness does this rig have?
What is a top speed?
What are the rpm's at 70 mph?
What kind of fuel mileage does it get?

I hope you don't mind me copy and pasting from 1leglance's original classified ad:

As for the highway it cruises 65 mph at 2500 rpm which give 17-18 mph
You can do 75-80mph but it just seems more comfy at 65.
Hills are the only issue without a turbo, here in Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado where the big mountains are you have to downshift earlier than a turbo does. If a hill is really steep or long (over 1/2 mile) you slow down to 3rd gear and 45-50 mph....basically you are running with semi trucks or big RV's at times.

I wish I could make you an offer within the next two months, but it isn't going to happen. I have my eye on it though and have been following the threads. I sure would like to make something work.

Life is good on the road in the troopie :)

Emails and PM's have been replied to!

Open to trade offers along the lines of newer toyotas, 2006+ F-150's, etc, though am considering throwing in all the goodies for cash offers. Cash offers get priority.

Some pics from the road. Nothing beats a family trip made by possible by land cruisers

Home from our trip, she did great. Lots of pavement, but cruising around I had a consistent 17 mpg or so throughout. Not bad considering how laden she was.

Lots of attention, too :)

A few more of the little things that fall into place during any extended trip out of the truck.

This first one denotes my first and last experience in an RV park. Traveling with a 77 year old and a camper led to a few compromises that I didn't mind making.

I don't think the pup wants you to sell this thing. He looks sad already.

Tell me about it! He loves the troopie because he knows it means we're heading out!!

Willing to knock $500 off to cover your flight into Seattle if you want to come drive this baby home

Thanks man, I've actually been subscribed to your "Diva" thread for a while... back when I was looking for 100 series.

If you weren't on the east coast and your rig was a little more stock...
