Hello from Portugal
Please allow to present my recently acquired FJ70 . It is in very good condition and has only 61200 km . It was bought new in 1990 at Peking , China , by the former Portuguese ambassador some months after he was appointed to that job , in 1989 . He stayed in Peking until 1993 and then was appointed ambassador to Moscow , tooking the FJ70 with him . He stayed as ambassador at Moscow until 1997 , where his diplomatic career ended and he retired ( not a young fellow ) , returning to Portugal and bringing the FJ , registering it with Portuguese license plates in 1998 . He lived just a few km away from me and serviced the FJ70 at the local dealership where I saw it several times . Tried to buy it a few times , but no luck ! In 2012 , I was told that the FJ was sold by his niece , to someone near Lisbon , and I lost track of this car until it showed for sale at the end of November 2025 in a local used car online platform . The price was too high for me and I let it sit for almost two months , before I contacted the seller . Not a single person showed interest buying it and that was predictable in Portugal . The FJ has a 3F engine , four litre , carburetor , 6 cylinder engine . Lowest grade of petrol, costs here north of 2 Euros per litre ! Only a somewhat deranged Land Cruiser guy like me would buy it , and after hard negotiations , we agreed to a decent price , and I brought the FJ with me , driving 300 km to my house at Viana do Castelo ( North of Portugal ) . Engine good , no misfires , started always good , but with a somewhat dangerous issue : only the right front wheel was braking :) ! A bit of a crazy trip , pouring rain , and very little traffic , I arrived safely 5 hours later .
Now for the FJ specs :
FJ70 LV-KR ; Chassis # FJ70-0014205 , production date 05-1990 .
3F carburated engine ; 4 speed manual with transfer ; No power steering ; 4 drum brakes all around , no automatic seat belts ; no free locking front hubs from factory ( fitted later ) ; open diffs ; front bench seat 3 places , rear parallel seats ; Original Toyota AM radio ; Original cassette Toyota player . STD , poverty pack , but factory AC ( not working yet ) . But all this talk is nothing without pics and there they are . These first 4 are the next day I arrived . You can see also my HZJ75 , and my GR Yaris !

This is only the beginning , as the FJ has some issues that I have been trying to solve , namely radiator and brake issues but for now more photos follow .
Edit - This is at my warehouse , with my other Land Cruisers .

And a few more . Note that the 3F sticker at the valve cover gasket is in Chinese caracteres :) !
As you can see , the carburator is not original , it is Australian made , bought by the previous owner . I have the original and will try to rebuild it with a Keyster rebuild kit I managed to buy at UAE . Difficult to find and needles with different specs , but I think it will be possible to put the original ones .

A few more , with the VIN tag . The last 2 are from today , I finally managed to sort the brakes and cooling issues with the help of a good friend , so as the weather was fine , the FJ70 goes in a small trip about 50 km . Worked perfectly !

Hello,

Congratulations!

The story is fascinating.

This is the elusive 4-speed, drum brake all around 70 Series. A rare find. It is interesting that while it is as basic as it gets, it has AC.

It has been a while since I last saw a short wheelbase 70 Series without sliding windows.

The engine has a thermostatic valve and a hot air circulation system, presumably because of emissions requirements. Interesting.

At 61k km, it is not even broken in. Now that is low mileage.

What a captivating story, thanks for sharing!
...original paint too! As it concerns the interior, it seems decent of H.E. the Ambassador!
Congrats mate for your courage to purchase (and probably save) it!

Bom dia and greetings from Greece!

Wow wow, great find and color!! Those stripes are period-correct for the truck and the specs.

Let me know if you want a brand-new carburetor, I can bring it to usa in the 20 of April
Thanks Meshal ! I will try to rebuild the original carburator first , but I will consider buying a new original one if I cannot rebuild the original . I am located in Portugal , not the USA . As for the original stripes I may be interested in, depending on the price as some of them are starting to show some degradation . Can you give me a price for the carburator and stripes ?

Some days ago I said that I managed to sort the brake issues . In fact , this FJ70 is a unique beast . The wheel cylinders , the brake shoes , the brake drums , are different from any other Land Cruiser I know . Completely different to my 1982 HJ60 wich also has drum brakes at the 4 wheels . The previous owner tried to adjust the brakes , but only managed to puncture one of the cups . Luckily , one of the HJ60 cups although a slightly different did the job as I had one spare in my parts stash . This the original punctured .

More brake issues : Cylinders and shoes completely different from other Land Cruisers . Shoes are almost 8 cm wide (about 3 inches) . Cylinders only have one adjuster wheel . No one is equal to the other , the front ones are different to the back , the left ones are different from the right ones . The inside of the cylinders was perfect , so after cleaning everything we managed that everyone was sealing properly . But wait ! There is more !

After cleaning and adjusting cylinders , shoes and drums , the FJ brakes were terrible ! Spongy pedal and suddenly braking , blocking the wheels . Big head scratcher ! Dismantling , cleaning , adjusting everything one more time time , until I noticed something "strange" . The drums have some inside markers "0 4 R" and "0 4 L" . Presumably for Right and Left . As you already guessed the right one was on the left , and the left one was on the right . The person that "repaired" the brakes before me , didn't noticed that and mixed the brake drums .
After changing the drums to their proper location , a miracle happened ! Good progressive , effective , balanced brakes on the FJ70 !
I must confess that I didn't knew that brake drums had lefts and rights , and these L & R markings were the first that I have ever seen .

Hello Greek Cruiserhead ! Thanks for your kind words ! This FJ70 needs indeed some courage to purchase and saving . Luckily it is in very good condition . The electric wiring , plugs , relays , lamps , everything is on their proper places , nothing modified , nothing broken . The engine is perfect , needing valve and perhaps carburator adjustment ( I think ) , no smoke , no strange smells . Gearbox , transfer case and diffs working smooth as silk . One or two very small specs of rust and a few dings , normal for a 36 years old cruiser . Even the striping is original . Yes I needed some courage to buy it and will need much more to drive it with Portuguese fuel prices - 2,33 € per litre today . Fuel consumption is about 15-17 litres per 100 km , normal road driving & highway , at about 100-110 km/ hour .
Καλό απόγευμα and greetings from Portugal ! Cheers !
