After being bummed about the failed smog, my son and I went out to the foothills and did some wheeling up and down some steep stuff. Then back to work, valve adjustment and new gasket.
Total Savings: $269.00
Shop estimate - $311.00
Doing it myself with a little help from a buddy:
New OEM gasket $35.00
Feeler gauges $7.00
Noticed a lot of oil in the air flow meter and intake hose. Also relized the PCV valve needs to be replace, not sure this would cause the truck to fail smog, but I got to start somewhere, new one ordered, forgot the grommet, but I will call after turkey day and order it too. Aslo ordered new vacuum hoses.

Only 2300 miles on the truck since I had all the work done in 2010 to pass smog after I purchased it: New O2 sensors, new catalytic converters, new exhaust system, new fuel filter, major tune up, except the valve which I did today. Timing is good too.
You can't go wrong with a valve adjustment. Just don't set them too tight. Toyota engines don't like that ......
PCV valve can't hurt either.
Has the cruiser been sitting for a while? Have you driven it long enough to get the cats good and hot so they can do their job properly? New fuel? When's the last time you added some fuel injector cleaner? I like Lucas .....

Cruiser had been sitting for about 6-7 months with a bad water pump. It had about of 1/4 tank of old gas before filling up with high octane gas. In addition the the PCV valve and vacuum hoses, I will add some injector cleaner and get it good and warmed up before taking it in for a retest.
Ooooh.......GROSS POLLUTER...!! They can't just say sorry you failed, they label you GROSS (probably a State-O-Cal ploy to demean Cruiser owners and discourage their use!). I can say you are definitely totally hooked on your cruiser though. It looks great and it's practically a tank once you get it all dialed in. Good luck with your rig! 
BTW, George- see the picture where the A/C lines go into the firewall there and how the rubber seal is pulled out like that? Mine does the same thing and I can't seem to get it back in there so it will stay. Any ideas- and what's causing that??
That engine compartment looks really clean, mine has some serious cruiser crud from being parked outside alot. Being in a garage definitely has it's advantages.

Question, could a broken cold start timer switch cause the engine to run too rich even after the engine is warm/normal operation temp?

Removed old PCV Valve and grommet. Looked like a smiple job, however that thing was hard to get out! I had to stand on a foot stool and I am 6' 2" to get good leverage. Used a pair of channel locks and a screw driver handle between the valve cover and channel locks and huffed and puffed until it finally came out.
The old gromet was also a pain, it came out in small chucks. Thankfully nothing fell into the valve cover area, pluged the hole with a rag while I was chipping away to old grommet.
The new parts went it easy...

Doing it myself: Parts cost $60.00 (new valve, gormmet and hose)
Labor time less than one hour.

Third time is a charm. Passed CA smog today. Turned out to be a issue with the wiring to the O2 sensors.
Also new vacuum hoses.
Shop Estimate: $468.00

just goes to show that most of the things that need fixin on cruisers really ien't rocket science. if you have the tools, a place to work, the mechanical aptitude and a little time to educate yourself about the subject at hand ........ you can do most of the work yourself. sure, some of it takes a little more technical know-how. but most of it is not that tough.

Thanks for all your advice and the parts I needed for the water pump job. Lots left to do, but I got another project/money pit that is competing for my time and money. I started project thread in the 80 series section to document all the work and savings of doing most of the work myself. Or with the help of a buddy.

After working on my LX450 most of the day, my son and I went out wheeling. I am always amazed at the stuff this thing will climb. Even Thor was impressed when we got to the top of Volcano Mtn.
