I bought a 78 FJ40 with Ca emissions and it has a "spoon" end on the pedal. When the pedal goes to the floor it makes contact with a switch under the dash.

What is it and what do it do?

Perforamance mods to be done?:D

leave it alone?:frown:

Adjustments?:bounce2:

Throttle position switch for the Power Valve Control System. Opens the power valve on the carb when the throttle is wide open and temp is above 131 degrees. I think it attempts to compensate for crappy response at open throttle caused by the rest of the smog gear (when warmed up; prior to engine warm-up, the valve is controlled by vacuum).

Get rid of it if you are getting rid of the other smog gear.

I modified the "spoon" to be the connection point for my hand throttle. I could have welded on some other attachment point, but I already had the switch paddle. :D

Yes, it controls the power valve electrically. Non-smog carbs have power valves too, except they are vacuum operated. They both do the same thing: temporarily enrich the mixture at wide open throttle under load but you have more precise control with the electronic system.

BTW, it you just remove the electronic control, the valve will always be open and the engine will run rich and waste fuel. If you remove it, connect it to manifold vacuum, but it may not open properly.
