Hi there, I have a 78 40 that has a thread on here and my dad recently traded his motorcycle for this 1970 Fj40. It runs and drives but needs some work. We picked it up in Idaho and hauled it back to Utah. We are still trying to figure out everything thats done to it. So far from what we can tell the driver side rear quarter panel has been smushed at some point and poorly repaired. It has an auxilary fuel tank setup that we are not sure even works, a rough country lift that rides stiff, awful front seats and a pretty neat rear bench. If any one has any insight into anything else done that we havent noticed please let me know. We will basically be cleaning it up and enjoying driving it.

Here are some pictures.

Where it was sitting in Idaho when we got there to pick it up. Fired right up and drove itself onto the trailer. We got a 2nd set of bare doors, the rear swingout, a factory skid plate, cloth doors, bikini top and a set of fender flares with it.

First thing was to remove the awful bra.

Life is very stiff. Would changing it out for nicer 2.5" leafs help any?

Rear bench. I think its a Conn-Ferr bench. Storage under it front and rear.

Driver side has a lot of bondo. We will be taking it off and fixing the corner correctly.

The wheels will also be repainted soon, not big fans of the punisher logos.

Any insight from people more knowledgeable than us would be greatly appreciated!! I will keep updating this with pictures as we go along getting this back on the road.

The clutch master cylinder cover is interesting!

Yes, a 1970 would have had a split bench seat. I have a 71 LHD and it originally had a two piece split bench, split between the driver (1/3rd) and passenger side (2/3rd). The square tube and flat bar is what somebody used to retrofit the buckets into it. The under seat tool box is stock.

Sent you a message about the decal!! Thanks!

Starting pulling the doors apart to fix them and clean them out. The hinges are worn out and they are filled with leaves and other junk.

Also starting looking into the spare doors that came with it to make into half doors and noticed a slight problem with that. Both are passenger side doors. Sigh.

Got the wheels painted and the door back together. Looking at suspension now, we are thinking about getting a OME kit to replace the Rough Country.

Changed the front leafs out for OME's and will be doing the rear after the body work is done. STarted working on the crusty parts in the back.

AFter some frame straightening and such he finally got the tub looking good and level. Ground all the bondo off and got it looking good. all the rot in the rear is gone now, next he is going to work on the mess under the doors.

Wow that is a very big difference! I've got some rust in back quarters and just starting to see at the kick plates under the side doors. I'll try to get fixed this winter by a professional. I have no skill with metal or welding etc.

The clutch master cylinder cover is interesting!
My 1970 had the exact same thing! Perhaps there's some weird 1970 40 series vortex that spits out those things for owners of lost reservoir caps.

Also found a hole in the gas tank he is patching.

He did spray it with rust stopper and figured it was just additional drainage for under the tank haha. If i tell him to fix it he just tells me i can fix it when I inherit it haha.

He wasnt happy with the color so he added some black tint to it and re-sprayed the interior. We think its much better.

Wow, your "refresh" has started off in a thorough manner. Very impressed how much progress you made in just a mere 1 1/2 months. I look forward seeing more of your build milestones. Keep given'r heck!

Tech questions:

What carb came with this rig?

What do the vac lines hook to that resides in between the valve cover and carb?
