Jason

I finally had a few minutes to look for stuff for you today. I have several good used cam gears, but no new ones. Good column tubes: check.

On the linkage ends, SOR shows NOS ones for under $30bux. I think that's a better call for you.

I wasn't aware that they were different. Maybe you, and/or someone else, can enlighten me on the differences.

Don

A pic should suffice

Hopefully this is the last of the bad news... I took the short block in to the rebuilder today, he is very experienced and is considered the best engine rebuilder anywhere around here. He looked at the coolant passages (especially this one) and strongly suggested "find a different block".

IMG_1112.JPG

His concern is the pitting is so bad and has advanced so far toward the head gasket sealing surface that he has doubts about the ability of the head gasket to actually seal. That, and how badly deteriorated the coolant passages likely are. He stated this was the most horribly corroded block he's ever come across

I hauled the short block back home to start disassembly. Both Mike (the rebuilder) and I figure the connecting rods, crankshaft and camshaft will likely be re-usable.

Pulled the pan, full of water and antifreeze ALONG with broken off cotter pins from the connecting rod nuts.

One leg on the oil pump screen/pickup was also sheared off. From the looks of it, it occurred long ago. The pickup screen also had large chunks of red RTV lodged in it

Starting disassembly after marking all the connecting rod caps...

Pistons and connecting rods and all out and the connecting rods are stamped (front facing) 1-6

Main bearings....not good. The #4 bearing set is really awful. Either inadequate oiling or shimming is my guess. Either way, the bearing is starting to melt and separate. I'm VERY glad we found this Jason

These are the connecting rod bearings Jason. Not "horrible" (I've seen much worst on Toyota diesel 1HD-T's) but not great.

Crankshaft out...and the crankshaft journals look pretty good. I think they'll just need some polishing.
IMG_4162.JPG

Some of the shims were really ginked up and one of them had been caught up underneath one of the bearing cap guides. This destroyed the shim and must of really screwed up the bearing pre-load.

Now things are really apart! Actually, there is nothing left to take apart at this point. All components (minus the differentials) are in pieces around my shop

I forgot to load a photo of the crankshaft...

I told Jason: at least it doesn't look like this one!

This symbolizes the symbiotic relationship of GM and Toyota components in my FJ40. Yeah, it's an "F" crank welded to a small block 350 crank. University level bulls*** art. It also functions as my mailbox stand

I had just enough time this afternoon to determine I still have two F135 longblocks on the rack. I had two shortblocks last month, but finally decided no one was ever going to ask for one so I tossed them.

I will try and take a look at both tomorrow. I have to roll up the shop door and move the welder to get to them.

I just cried...thanks for taking the time to look for parts

Dropped this pile off for powdercoat today...

It should all be done around the 14th of this month. Chassis parts will be high gloss black and the valve cover and assorted transfer case plates will be orange

Serious question Mark- Where did you toss them? Can I go scavage hunt them back? :)

A large scrap metal yard. They have daily pickups.

I still have a note to look at the two longblocks I have left. I was preoccupied today. Perhaps you have seen my thread in the announcement section?

Yep, I can totally see why you've been busy. Best of luck to you ahead Mark.
