Another thing is as soon as the pad rusted a small hole in the roof, that whole inner roof assembly can hold water.

Yes, I totally agree with that, never thought of that. Once that roof perforated it probably increased the moisture content 100x's. Then it really started to rust.

I plan on fixing it of course, but not only priming it, but laying down a couple coats of single stage urethane paint just for good measure. Also, no plans to run the pad that far down either.

I actually use the PPG omni base color, but spray the good stuff over the top - PPG's DCU 2021 clear. Color is color as far as I'm concerned when your base/clearing it's the clear that makes a difference, at least that's my experience.

Yep, we go that exact route, clear is part of the job that gives it the bling.


When it comes time to paint and the body is off, again, I am going to seam seal the shiat out of it, then shoot a single stage urethane on the bottom and then use a product I used on my 40 called SEM. Stuff is a tintable 2 part bedliner that you add toner to, get the exact color of the vehicle and spray it on with a Shutz gun.

This works great, I even topcoat with paint because the unless tinted at the paint store it will be quite light. The Hippo tintable liner recommends a splash of paint in it, I might have it tinted at the paint store the next time.

Held up extremely well on my 40 so far and I like the durability and the fact that you get the body color underneath and inside the wheel wells.

And, on another note..........Didn't get diddly squat done on the LV this week or weekend. It was county fair all last week and this weekend it was nice and hot out, so it was off to the lake again for some more fun in the sun and jet skiing. Couple pics of this weeks fun Not cruiser related, but I would hate for you guys to think I was sittin on the couch watching Oprah.......

Real grainy dark pic, actually was a little more light out, but the camera couldn't pic it up. It was the last heat of the night, new truck class at the fair demo this year. 1965 International Travelall wagon. I talked to a few guys in that truck class that new him. They said when he got it all the glass was in it and full interior and little to no rust.

Needless to say, I thought it was sad to say the least

No plans to work on the LV for the next week either. Leaving for Airventure Wed. morning for 5 days. I gotta get my camping gear out tonight and start getting packed up, loading up tomorrow night. Hopefully when I get back next week I can get something done on the lv .

It's been a while, had a few things going on the last couple weeks. Spent 5 days down in Oshkosh, actually just got back from that Monday night. Managed to get back out and do a little on the LV this evening.

I rolled it out of the shop and had to spend some time wrapping everything up in plastic for blasting. Took a few bags sand, got the upper rail blasted where I took the roof off. Went good, just took some time. The inner piece is pretty much toast, just rotted through in to many places. I started drilling the spot welds out on the inner piece. Going to take that off, blast underneath there and then start fixing everything on the inside of the vehicle. I think I will just make that entire piece that goes inside there again, pretty basic.

Anyway, few pics, hopefully I will get out there tomorrow night and get that inner piece off and then blasted underneath.

Um, ah, er, well, jeeez.

I just now found this thread, and was up until 3 am last night, then back up and at the computer this morning and read this thread from start to finish. I am completely flabergasted. Amazing, Amazing work. I have enjoyed watching this thing be torn apart and reborn in front of my eyes in a matter of hours.

You really should think about putting together some tech stuff for the Toyota Trails.

Not a ton of time today, but managed to get a couple hours out there today.


Blasted that inner portion and some tin that has to go back on. Blasted and layed down a heavy coat of DP50. Might be able to get out there tomorrow if not next week. Start cutting metal and going the other way.

I buy all my PPG product from a local Carquest Auto parts store in my area, your area might be different? You might be able to go on PPG's website to find a local dealer, or just make some phone calls. I imagine some auto parts store in your area has PPG product?

For the primer you will need DP50LF - this is the primer itself, the 50 number is the color, 50 is grey.

You will also need to buy a quart of DP402 - this is the catalyst for the primer. It is a 2:1 ratio, 2 parts primer to 1 part catalyst.

I would also recommend a gallon of reducer, I use MR186. The guy at the auto parts store will tell you don't need it and is not required. He is correct it isn't specified in PPG's instructions for there DP line of primers, but my body man buddy turned me onto it. Add about 10 to 15% of reducer to your sprayable primer. DP is some thick stuff, the reducer helps it come out the end of the gun a little better and also it flows out on the surface for a few more seconds before it flashes off for a smoother and nicer finish.
