Hello All!

My dad and I were hauling a 1965 FJ40 across Montana and strong winds ripped off the old sun rotted fiberglass cap. From what I can see, the aftermarket fiberglass tops don't work on 65 and earlier FJ40s. Does anybody have a solution? We were already hoping to replace the fiberglass top, but now it just became a lot more urgent.

One of my locals tried a Gozzard replacement cap on his ‘64 and he was happy with the results. The one time I saw it at the shop after he had the top installed, I noted that they had to do some pretty deep gouging into the front lip over the windshield frame to clear the wiper motors.

The sides and back do not angle in from the bottom to the top on corrugated tops like the later top with rear corner windows do. The front of the top does not have a lip with bolts to the windshield like later tops. Because of that I also use straps on old cruiser. Top is the newer style but it wasn't bolted to the windshield frame. On any cruiser I've picked up with a hard top I use straps until I get familiar with cruiser.

We will certainly be doing this from now on. Lesson learned the hard way.

if needing to piece things together, wondering about taking 2 later tops and making 1 to get the proper width, as the width at the windshield frame is the same, it is wider and a different angle from the windshield frame rearward.

there is this option also, requiring another roadtrip and some negotiation:

it is an earlier 1 so it has the roof vent, there may have been 1 for sale in OR also but that was awhile ago
