Just an update - am working on ignition and brakes.

I have just finished installing 1978 full electronic ignition.

I am now (as you probably can see in the 40 section) dealing (still) with braking demons.

I am trying to get these ironed out so that I can attend the Rising Sun Ghost Town Run.

I hope you are all doing well.

all the best - Dallas

Wiring is not finished here - but shows the components I used:

3. Correct "Big Window" Blue Aisin carb rebuilt and installed.
4. Air cleaner fixed and painted.

Take care all and best wishes,

Getting ready for the "Dressing Room"
Picture 1 - Started to sand the cab, removing the bed.
Picture 2 - A few of the "pillars" in the bed filled with dust/crap and rusted a bit at the bottom. I patched them up.
Picture 3 - Going over the bed with a fine-toothed comb, every ding, dent, bit of rust, etc.. fixed.
Picture 4 - The hindge bolts (many of them) even after soaking in PB Blaster, and heating snapped off like butter. You can see in the photo those little "boxes" that simply trap dirt/moisture. The picture shows them punched out - but I later cut the entire back off those boxes so that I can get a washer/nut on the back of a bolt after paint.

Just an update, more to come as I get her ready for the dressing room.

Paint choice: Toyota T621 Rustic Green

More soon - Dallas

It was a bit chilly outside today so I opted to spend a day inside playing games and cleaning/restoring knick knacks on the FJ45.

The VIN plate on the firewall was a disaster. If you guys recall from earlier in this thread:

Now I have polished it up and repainted it. I know it's not perfect, but it took a lot of work so I thought I would share.

I had to sharpen a toothpick and dip it into black paint as shown:

Just another one of those small things as the project comes together.

Thanks for still tuning in to my thread.

I'll have to try that also - very nice work. I'm a detail guy too. "Anal" is what my wife calls it . I find the details make the project. Any bloke can do the big pieces of a project but it can still look unfinished without the details filled in:cool:.

Kudos, Dallas !
Some background please:
how long polishing?
how long painting?
only with a toothpick?
special paint?
clear coated?

Thx.

Thank you for the comments.

how long polishing?
5 min. I have an old dryer motor mounted on a bench grinder stand with a cloth wheel on it. Hardly any pressure, since the vin plates are a bit important and flimbsy. So I just used a wee bit of polishing compound and gently held it against the wheel to let it do the work.

how long painting?
15 min. It is hard to get in between the letters.

only with a toothpick?
Yes, only a sharpened toothpick to paint with and then a DULL exacto knife (so you dont scratch the metal) to clean up the letters.

special paint?
Testors black model paint.

clear coated?
Yes, I used just a rattle can clear (don't panic when you spray it it looks dull, but will flow out nice and dry perfect). I put on a single coat, just enough to protect the metal and black paint.

I am working on cleaning the frame today and trying to figure out what to use to clean/prep the underside of my metal lid (the top). That nasty foam, old glue, it is just gross after removing the old headliner.

Have a good day everyone!

Nice

Going back to the original red? I certainly would!
Cool that Destin found and order the same original factory red for his '64 40 :bounce2:

Hello Dean!

Over the past several months I have done as much research as I can on this thing. I tried to trace this thing all the way back to Japan. I have traced the dealership that ordered it, the freight company that shipped it here, dates, etc...

It was ordered through San Bernardino, CA Toyota by the Sheriff's office to be used as a department fire truck. I verified this through the counties annex and historical records.
It was hosed RED (originally cream from Toyota) at the SB County shop as all of their emergency vehicles, fire vehicles, and search and rescue vehicles were hosed red, and outfitted with various emergency hardware (in my case Hornes, flashers/lights, siren, radio equipment, etc..).

So if I were to be an absolute purist - I should paint it cream.

There is one Toyota color in particular that has tickled my fancy since I first saw it. T621 Rustic Green. I love that color and have decide to paint my 45 in it as I can't stand that cream color and Red was not original.

I have been keeping an eye on Destin's thread and yes - I agree that particular red is indeed pretty sexy. When he painted that fender skirt - it looks great!

I don't know if people will crindge at the thought of me painting it T621 or not, I don't know. I just know that is my favorite Toyota color and the cream color is anything but interesting to me.

Thanks for tuning in!!

Dallas

Ah yes...I might have to reread your thread again...must be getting old. I remember the whole story now...sorry bout that.

You can chose what ever color you like...it is your truck after all :) I'll be searching for a pic of a rustic green after this...I know that Judson Green T453 might be a stock color for an older rig...are they similar?

As for not painting it off white...not to worry. While my '64 40 is an original off white, Sundune White T 1276, I am having a hard time getting my daughter to agree, so it looks like it will be Capri Blue T 310 when finished. We looked at Horizontal Blue this past week, but the Capri seems to have more 'blue' in it, makes my daughter happy, (we are restoring it together) and it is correct for the year, so it's OK with me ;)

Just keep up the nice work...and posting more pics...great thread
