Need some advice on batteries and grid heaters. My truck is 12v and motor was 24v. Only thing left, that I can’t seem to find anywhere, is a 12v grid heater. Right now I’ve got a single battery. 850 CCA. I also live in a pretty cold climate, and while I plan to garage this bad boy, it’ll need to be started occasionally in below freezing temps after sitting over night.

Do I need the grid heater? Do I need two batteries?

It depends on how far below freezing you want to go. The 24v grid heater will work with 12v but not get as hot as it should. 1hdft 12v grid heaters are pretty easy to find, may not be hard to adapt. Without the grid heater you will get a little more white smoke/smell on startup. I think you should try it out without it see if you like it. There are alot of electronics involved if you want it to be automatic. Dual batteries have more reserve capacity and available amps but one good 27 battery will work as long as you don't go too cold. Single battery works well for me and other diesel cruiser owners here in Ohio.

This is what I was hoping to hear. Was thinking I’d hook up a grid heater to a momentary push button and skip and fancy electrics, but if it wil work without, that’d be ideal. I don’t plan on really cold starts being a regular thing, but don’t want to get stranded. Maybe I’ll just keep another big jump box in the truck if I get caught out in the real cold.

sounds like a plan, easy to add it later if you need it. probably a little more power without the restriction also. the fuel additives that increase cetane also help with cold starts.

You might want to double check this. It is my understanding that the grid heater is two elements in series. You change the wire tap for 12v or 24v. IE, it is a common part. Check the HJ61 EWD.
