My hj61 has plugs that are unused from factory. Was it on starter motor side? I have plugs on that side not user

Yes it is on the intake side of the motor going towards the starter. Could you see if that wire (black with red stripes from the starter solenoid) is not being used? It might be for an automatic transmission.

Sorry i know its longer than 10 hrs but just finished work and its pitch black out. So prepare for crappy pics. The three unused plugs i have on the right side of the motor next to starter are as follows

Hey no worries, that is exactly what I was looking for! Looks like it is indeed a useless wire. Thank you for that:beer:

Put the radiator in along with the air cleaner to see if it all fits:

Now it's time to get back to wiring. The alternator and starter are good (I will find out soon) and now I need to hook the glow system in.

Does it get cold where you are? Im in south australia so the coldest i see is 0 degrees celcius, my glow screen isnt hooked up and she fires up within half a turn, love compression fire
If ur not extremely cold u may not need it straight away, could get you on the road quicker

You may already know but that plug harness will require a plug loop as in the photo from Niffa, I just did a conversiôn myself, as it needs to loop back to itself to complete the circuit for starting

Chances are I won't need it, but since I have the harness open I'm going to go ahead and hook it up. I've heard good things about how these motors start up quick.
I'm hoping to get the old girl fired up tomorrow. Might be a few weeks until it's drive able, still have to get my power steering connected and make sure all of the gauges work properly.

I went back and checked the fsm wiring sheet for the starter and I noticed that! Thanks for the heads up.

Enjoying your thread, look forward to seeing more of your good work

Thank you sir, I appreciate it. Going kinda slow but this is my first time to swap a motor/ work on a diesel so I'm taking my time. It will get exiting soon!

Got quite a bit done today... Hooked up the heater lines, radiator hoses, attached the intake pipes, filled it up with oil, changed my rubber fuel lines to diesel rated lines, filled it up with 5 gallons of diesel, primed the lines and then... Attempted to start it. It was close but no cigar yet.

I kept getting a kick in click at the starter when I turned the key and checked with the voltmeter that I was indeed getting 12v on the signal wire from the ignition switch. I know it wasn't the ground because I hooked it from the starter bolt to the negative terminal on the battery.

I then pulled it out and bench tested it and it does engage. Re-installed it and tried to "Hotwire" it from the post to the signal wire and still just a click. I am going to take it to Napa in the morning and get it tested while under pressure to see if the starter itself is good.

It's not the end of the world though, tomorrow I can stay busy by making a bracket for my PS reservoir and Racor fuel/water separator.

How I left it tonight... The anticipation is killing me.

I am going to make a bracket for the filter on the air cleaner. The tabs are rigid.

Gas cap off of the HJ61, or should I say "diesel cap"

Also while I was hooking up the remaining vacuum hoses I noticed that I am missing the diaphragm that the VSV hooks up to in order to turn the motor off:

It has a tab that was drilled out to accommodate a cable of some sort. I was planning on running the choke cable over the block to do this anyways so the PO has made that easy... The choke cable might fool someone if they try to steal my car.

Here is a picture off of my dad's block for reference:

I may have missed something here, but did you say this motor is a JDM, indicating it's a 24v 12HT ?. I'm just thinking out loud, did you swap the starter for a 12v starter, or have the original 24V starter still attached ?

Yes it's a JDM 12ht. I bought a 12V alternator and starter so that isn't the problem. I may have gotten a bad starter, I will find out tomorrow morning...
