12 AND 13 mm Bolts???

So....after getting under the bumper to find the source of leaking coolant, I removed the plate protecting the bottom of the radiator and found that in order for it to be removed, BOTH 12 and 13 mm sockets were needed. And one 12 mm got stripped a little due to the angle and corrosion.

Is this REALLY true? Are there supposed to be both sizes for this plate?

Also, any good recommendations for cleaning that plate up as to de-greasers would be GREAT!

They should all be 12mm. Someone replaced one.

My guess is the 13MM bolts were non Toyota. I have purchase bolts from hardware stores and these generally will be 13MM which the same thread will have a 12MM with a Toyota bolt. I removed this skid plate on my FJ62 within the last year to wire a winch. All the bolts had the same head. I also purchased this cruiser when it was just a few years old so not much time for POs to change things.
 
The 12mm and 13mm headed bolts are both M8 (8mm across the threaded part of the bolt); there are just two different standards for how big you ought to make the head of an M8 bolt. M8 with 13mm heads are vastly more common in your average hardware store bins.

So, someone probably stripped some of the originals and replaced them. I know that's the case in several spots on my cruiser. I'm looking at you, exhaust hangers...

That was the last bolt on my cruiser that I tried to fix, later the brake caliper needed a helicoil :D

I've always blamed 13mm heads on the Americans, they don't won't to buy too many wrenches and a 13mm is the same as a ½". :p

This is entirely humour :cheers:
 
12mm head on 8mm shaft is JIS (Japanese standard) 13mm hex head is DIN (German standard). Just look on line and buy whatever replacements you like.
