Don't go to Midas, they f' everything up. Buy all the parts you need and come on down to my house and I'll help you put them in. Seriously its not that hard of a job.

While we're talking about what NOT to use, I would HIGHLY recommend N O T using SP Performance Slotted Rotors and pads.....I can't tell you how much worse my 99 LX stops after this changeover! Not only is there a great deal of vibration in the pedal from the slots in the rotors (mainly after they eventually heat up), until the pads are WAY hot, they simply are scary! I called the guys at SP, and they said this simply isn't a characteristic of their setups, they didn't know what to say, and that I must have done something wrong......well, I've put on dozens of brake rotors and changed hundreds of pads, and I know the characteristics of having done something wrong. These rotors and pads were installed correctly......they just don't stop worth *#$& !!! (You couldn't get the ABS to activate if you pushed the pedal through the firewall.......it's remarkably hard to even get it to activate in the WET!........that is, until they're VERY hot)

I think I'm going back to smooth rotors and Toyota pads...the truck stopped GREAT with them, it's just that it was time to remedy a slightly warped rotor issue...

I just ordered some Hawk HPS Street Ferro/Carbon pads for $60/front axle and ATE Premium slotted rotors for $100 each from Tire Rack. I will be receiving them tomorrow. Should I get the work done at the dealership? I have a local Goodyear Service Center that I have been using for other stuff. I wasn't happy with how they treated the wheels on my wife's BMW 330iP recently, but they seem okay otherwise. He actually mentioned to me about repacking the bearings on the front without my having to tell him, which seems good. Should I get him to replace them instead? My Cruiser has just over 80k miles right now.

No way I'd ever take my rig to a tire shop. I had one tire replaced in my near new honda and they chipped the coating on the wheels when yanking off the wheel weights. For me, it's either DIY or the dealer.

so where does one go to get a 54mm socket? I went to Home Depot, Pep Boys and Kragen.

I have both...the stamped steel (Kurt at CruiserOutfitters had it to me in one day) and the Craftsman 3/4" drive socket...which I actually prefer to use...worth the extra bucks to have at home and carry the stamped steel version in the truck for trail repairs.

Thanks for everyone's help thus far. I have a question now, as I am in the middle of doing this job. How do I get the C clip back on?

Just use c-clip pliers. Goes on quite easily.

Ditto. Wantacruiser FYI: C-Clip pliers are different from snap ring pliers...

Do you have a pic of the c-clip pliers and/or the c-clip itself? There are so many variations of pliers. I have snap ring pliers that have these square ends w/ knurling on them (not the kind w/ pins that fit into holes in the clip), but am wondering if they will work easily/at all.

I think I agree. I called the local Toyota dealership Friday morning and left a message requesting an appointment ASAP. I told them in the message what I needed done. I wasn't able to talk to an actual human being since the voice message said "all technicians are currently busy helping other customers". Anyway, I haven't heard from them since. I have to get this done before I leave town Wednesday around lunch time, so I guess I'll try and schedule with the Toyota dealer in a nearby town.

I have what sounds like the same type of c-clip pliers you have Jim...you can't tell from the pics however the inside surface of where the tool grips the c-clip is grooved. Worked perfectly on my 100 axles circlips.

Those look exactly like the ones I have, even the same color handles! Can't remember where I got them...maybe Sears?

Sears it is!

wow, I just went to sears and I had always thought that nobody shops at sears. Well, nobody does, but if I had to pick a place to buy tools, Sears would now be the place! That store has every damned tool you could possibly want.

Ok.. I'm still having some problems getting the C clip back on. I went to sears and bought a 1-5/32 size lock ring plier which looks exactly like what you guys have. But it doesn't expand the C-ring large enough for me to get it back on. Am I doing something wrong? I didn't see any other size for the lock ring plier. HELP!

Don't know...the tool I have shown worked great for me. I wonder if you have a smaller tool that does not open sufficiently for the clip?

I just went back to Sears and checked, and there's only one size for the plier. So what exactly am I doing wrong?
