The black line on the right in this image is the fuel return line.
That line has to get hot. I will be wrapping that one. Thank you.

New unit, which came with the VSVs. The canister was done, saturated and prematurely worn if you ask me. The VSVs we're working both one and the canister and at the engine I pressure tested both of them at 100 PSI and vaccum, triggered them on and off. Both opened closed and held pressure. I actually have a spare VSV from the engine I bought that first.

Your fix may have been the engine VSV, but that was not the case for me.
Ugh, after reading all of this again, I am going to replace the canister. we will be going to our third HIH and dont want to be worrying about this any more. @savirc you said your canister came w VSC's, I have an 05 built 10-04, saw there were two canisters one up to 5-05 and the other after that. Do all canisters come with the VSC's? The part I'm ordering is 77740-60440, can someone confirm part number and if VSC's come with it......... @Skidoo , if your going to HIH this year, you won't be smelling my fumes, will also try to find that "other" gas station that sells non ethanol gas.

Can a canister become unflooded?

Mine never has issues in the winter at any altitude. Only summer and that can be at zero feet above sea level.

I guess it could, but I think it would take a very very long time and reduce its efficiency dramatically. I still have my old one, I should crack it open to see what it looks like.

From reading this thread:

I got this...

1) Once the canister is saturated its done.

2) Toyota bothered enough to put an ECL on the 4runner when canister malfunctioned but not on the Land Cruiser

Still have gurgling. I am going to try heat wrap as well today. My cats are aftermarket and have no additional shields wrapped around them. The shield could also be about an 1.5 wider. May build another. If this doesn’t work. Getting a new canister.

Thanks for all the info guys! I'll be doing the DIY heat shield and canister before HIH this year. I'm VERY much over this problem. Had it bad again in Death Valley a couple weeks ago.

@Austin Hot Shoe can you do an install guide? Or is there one already? The part numbers I have for my 2004 are...

Charcoal Canister: 77740-60440
Air Switching Valve; No.1: 2586050100
Air Switching Valve; No.2: 2586050150

Is this what you are ordering too? I need to track down the hoses that go into the canister too.

Still really hard to believe Toyota has not done a recall.

Sorry, no write up, going to do it for the first time. Yes this is the canister I am ordering. The valves don't come with the canister?

Everyone running into this should file a case, one day they will do something with enough cases. Let me know if you don't know how to file one. I put a screenshot of mine a couple of pages back.

I don't think so. At least from what I could tell. I might stop by the dealership tomorrow and ask the parts guys before I order it online.

I just got off the phone with Toyota USA...They opened a case for me, requested I take truck to dealership to have them look at it for this concern. Once done, the lady asked that I call her back and that Toyota MAY be able to help me out w cost......
We will see.
