I am trying to make sure I buy the correct speedometer cluster for my 1979 FJ40. I have been scanning EBAY / various parts houses for the right cluster.

I have seen two different types installed in 1979 FJ40's. Mine is like the cluster in the attached photos and I want to be sure if I have to buy another one that I buy the correct model. Does the photo match other 1979?

I also checked SOR and cannot decide in there information reflects accurately on the clusters I have seen on the market.

The reason why I am replacing mine is the needle fell off and scratched the face plate where the numbers are. I thought about restoring it but finding just the center piece with the MPH and odometer has proven difficult.

Please post pics of your March 1979 FJ40 clusters.

I have an original 1979 cluster, and it does not have the orange 55. It does have the 50 Amp meter. I know for a fact that it is a 79 do to the fact it has been in the family since new!! Not sure if this switched during 79 or not?

Hi PaLCruiser- thanks for the post. Would you please post a photo of yours? I found one locally that is close to what you have described. I sort of would rather pay $100 locally for a replacement that $150 or more to ship one here.

The picture you have posted is from my 1980. This was not available in 79.

The picture I am posting is from my 1979. what you need to know is the plug on the back.


I am looking to have mine replaced with a 6 dig odo and the newer face.

I am so lost here on mud, People talk to me all the time like I should know them. Ebay and mud names are never the same.......

Shane- You sold me a interior rocker panel in flat grey primer. My body man put it in and it fit as would be expected.

I also asked you about interior floor mat pieces that go under the front seats. BTW do you have any speedo cluster pieces to sell that would fit this repair?

O the mat pieces.....Have not dug those out yet......to much to do!

On the speedo, I will but not for months. I want to have my 79 restored with the 6 dig odo from the 82. I will be sending it to redlide guage works in van nuys.

They will rebuild and restore to as NEW for you.

You are correct, But in 1980 they did that white box with a small 55 in it. You dont see it ofter since they are not to many 1980's out there. 1980 was the lowest production year second to 1983.
 
Not to hijack, but I'd sure like to get the 50A gauge......my 30A pegs regularly when the taurus fan engages! Woohooo!

Should a 1983 speedo look the same as an 1982?

Here's a pic of the speedo a seller posted from an '83. They also claim that the mileage is 86,778. Is the white dail one tenth of a mile or 1 mile?
