Well the garage is near done among other things, and I have finally started the SO buildup and other minor projects I've been collecting parts for - the 40 has been on jack stands for over 2 months: This month I hope to finish the front axle rebuild with the 4x4 labs parts, shackle reversal, perches, driveshaft changes, and get a flat steering arm. Early April make new rocksliders and hack the tub up a few inches, maybe a front stinger, new skid plate and tie rear part of cage into frame.

Question for Today: I've got the springs completely disassembled so I can add the 46" add a leafs, and I need advise on paint. Eric is using slip plate on his springs, and I like that idea - but if I'm going to take the time to clean the springs I'd like something that's really gonna stick. Any ideas?

Sounds like you're living the dream... of a Landcruiser fanatic! Some cool projects man.
I can't attest to any knowledge of painting springs but what about either just slapping some grease on them or a rubberized undercoating, or both? My CCOT HFS springs are beginning to rust a little and they are less than a year old. I am going to slather some grease on them to slow (barrier from oxygen) corrosion and see if that works. Painting seems futile since the surfaces where the plates rub will likely wear through any paint and rust will begin again from the interior of spring pack.
A seemingly wise man once commented on preservation of metal and threat of rust... "grease is your friend". I slap that sheot all over everything, usually using the blue marine grease that is waterproof.

:zilla:

Cool...You better have it done before MAY!!! So ya gonna give me a run for my money on the trail? haha... good luck with the build brotha. As for the springs. They are gonna rust no matter what you do. I rattle them, grease or slinky strip the middle of them and wheel the snot out of them:D

Progress...

If I could just find a couple of cans of slip plate I think I'd be happy - no sourcese down here so far. Really just want to slap them together but the rest of the truck still shows it's frame off beauty (well ok except for the rust and all the places I've hit something :D ) - actually waxed the frame rails and the near 10 year old PPG 2 stage cleaned up insane. No matter, I'm redrilling the rears and installing this weekend.

Finished taking the front axle down last night - going to build up the knuckles in the new axle and grind for the Longs in the next few nights - and thinking I'm going to take the time to cut off the shock mounts, bumps stops, and brake line fastenors off the old axle and weld them on the new.

Still trying to figure out how to get the shackle reversal to clear the sag box - something will work out I'm sure.

Stopped by the driveline place - they want $100 each to lengthen the shafts :crybaby: . I've got one of Jesse's long travel shafts on the front, but if I flip the front springs I think I may be out of travel :D All in the details.

Totally stoked to get this project moving.

Slip Plate

Pop's picked me up a gallon from Tractor Supply - bringing it down tomorrow. Hope it's worth the effort.

Jim - You around - you still have my shutz gun sprayer???

Hey dude....where is the pics. I am gonna start posting pics of my progress if you don't get somthing up here soon.:flipoff2:

Progresssssssss

Good progress - but I would have rather been wheeling :D My front axle is now SO, ARB'd (existing), 4x4 Labs HS, and 30 spline longfielded :D

Got the new SO axle housing built up this weekend - spent a krapload of time cleaning everything up, grinding ends out to except minis/longfields, new seals, new knuckle studs/cones on top, repacked all the bearings, etc. All done spindle to spindle - just need to swap out the disc hubs as the pins and studs are all wallowed out from breaking hubs  - have to pull 4 apart, swap parts, remove wheel studs and install the mini studs and then that's done.

I've got pics but can't seem to remember how to post em. E-mailed Jim for advice - I can't remember how to correctly save 5 mp or 900 kb files down to the minimums?

resize them to 600 by 800 and reduce the quality by about half. Sounds like your moving along well. Hope ya don't mind waiting me to change birfs mr. longfield:flipoff2: Can't wait to wheel with ya brotha...

Pictures

Photoshop had been reset to gif when I had the computer rebuilt - just noticed and switched to jpeg. Should work now.

Sputnik, thats a pretty impressive spread. Its cheating though to slip in a used shackle and pins to fill out the display case... :flipoff2:

Oh man you've got good eyes :D . I've been collecting this stuff for a year, with some big splurges at Christmas - the old shackle and pins were out as I had to freaking figure out all the different poly bushings sizes to order... Half the bling is now inside or on the axle hopefully never to be seen or wrenched on again :D .

Minor Progress Tonight

Rear 2 springs painted with EZ Slip - like Slip Plate...

You're getting ahead of me Bill! I still need to get the slip plate in. If my guy can't get it by this weekend, I'm going to TSC for the same stuff you got. I plan to paint this weekend.

Eric

A gallon of EZ Slide was $25 at TSC. Their website said they had Slip Plate, and the receipt even called it "Slip Plate EZ Slide" but it looks like it's made by someone else. Anyways - super easy to put on and it looks to be bonding pretty well - I brushed it but it can be sprayed. Says it does not do well with excessive grease and oil. I'll be happy if they at least look decent for a year or so before they rust again.

If I had my shop fully up to speed - I think I would have had them sandblasted, then I'd paint with PPG Delstar, and then just a bit of slip plate where the springs contact. Oh well. I just want to get done so I can wheel.

Spring Packs Ready

Seems like the mundane stuff takes longer. I think the front springs are always flatter due to perch locations on frame - but it's obvious in the 2nd pic that the lower leaves weren't willing to play well with the add-a-leaf - figure they'll settle big time once some weight sits on em - hope so - want to get close to flat.

Do you mean mundane stuff like the 3 days it took me to "paint" the windshield hold down latches.. there really is a past time of 'watching the paint dry'.

Looking good, Bill!

I'm still trying to get some slip plate. I went to TSC and couldn't find it - the sales goons didn't have the first clue as to what I was talking about.

I've got the part number from their web site and may call today to see if they even have it in their inventory.

I'm painting this weekend with or without it. I've got the axles to get painted and the first couple coats on the springs will be regular paint too.

The end is in sight...

Let me know if you do any grinding or filing on the MAF shackles. Mine seem to bind a bit as the bolt gets almost all the way in - I think there is a bit of a shoulder on the bolts or something. I don't want to grind them because the zinc coating would be gone and lead to rust. I guess I could just crank them down? Have you noticed this with yours?

I just attempted to put the bolts in recently when I was trying to figure out which bushings go where, and noticed the same thing with one or two of the bolts. I will either use a BFH to just tap them in, or a rat tail file to open the holes a bit - I would not grind on the bolts themselves. Filing out the holes won't hurt anything as I think the cad plate gets worn off after a bit of flexing anyways - and if used frequently enough, will stay shiny with little or no rusting.

Grinding off front axle hangers this weekend - anybody have any tips on how to get the very front ones off - looks like it is going to be a biatch.

Still stoked that this project is moving along - dying to wheel.

I think that sounds reasonable - I'll do the same.

I called the local TSC and found out that they do have Slip Plate/EZ Slide in stock - quarts, gallons and aerosol cans. It's in a wierd part of the store - with harvesting supplies, not paint.

I'll probably be going there this weekend. Got to get this ball rolling...
