Please site some reasons why you can not install saginaw stearing box when you allready mounted Toyota Factory PTO winch, is it not possible to mount the winch a little bit to the left? to make enough room for the saginaw gb?
thnks

The PTO shaft interfears where the typical inside the frame Saginaw box mounts. Why don't you go with a Scout Saginaw box which mounts outside the frame? Here's a pic on my 55, but you get the idea:

I'm still not sure why everyone goes ape**** about the typical saginaw box. The Scout box pictured above is a cleaner install and there's not getting/reinforcing the front crossmember, plus it allows you to retain your PTO.

I like it too, but where do you get a saginaw like that these days? I'd imagine junkyard ones would be well used.
do the parts houses still carry those, Hamma?

I used an IFS Toy gearbox. It's not as clean an install as the scout box, but you could mount it no problem with the PTO.

which is cheaper to find the parts to set it all up and can both run on stock steering components? (the lower tie-rod) and would the 4" lift springs (SUA) also affect on mine (sorry for the hijack)
Most of the time Saginaw stuff is both cheaper and more powerful. IIRC none of the conversions can use stock 40 series parts. I have done most of the saginaw conversions and an FJ60 conversion onto 40 series trucks and all require conversion joints or tierods. I cannot speak to how an IFS Minitruck box pitman arm works with stock 40 series rod ends.

It doesn't - the IFS pitman comes stock with a TRE built into it. I knocked the TRE out and welded a plug into it with a tapered hole in it. Since that picture was taken I have converted to Marlins High-steer arms and am using FJ60 TREs all the way around.

Here is how it looks now.

An interesting note.

I found that the size and taper of an FJ60 TRE and a Minnie PU TRE are the same. The threads that screws the TRE into the Tie Rod is where the difference is. The FJ60 is at least twice the size.

What size tires are you running?

When you are turned full right, and the suspension compresses, does the tire not get into the steering gear?

35 BFGs. In that pic it did slightly.

I did a shackle reversal, which should fix that problem.

The new problem will be the pitman interfering with the spring on compression. Which I can fix with a bump stop and or flattening the pitman arm.

It's the fun of fabing up your own design. I wouldn't say it's better then going with a Saginaw, but I have no complaints with how it works.

And for having enough power to turn bigger tires. I had to replace my stock tie rod after I put the IFS box on as I bent it from pushing my tires against rocks.

rocks.

That's the undesirable side effect of Scout/FJ60 steering conversion with SR and low profile SO... I tried the the flat pitman arm still couln't fix it...Unless I keep dropping the bump stop with about 1.5" of up travel.

As I have it set up, the nut on the bottom of the TRE would barley hit the spring under full compression. That’s as it sits in the shop. What will happen in the real world will be realized as soon as my new drivelines come back from the shop (they are supposed to be done today) and I can take it out and flex it on some rocks. I figure I will have to tweak it some.

But that's the fun of it. :)

basically I would need to do my hysteer earlier than planned? man...there's a lot of saving for this one...Pump, Box, Hysteer arms, Rods n Ends, misc fittings, mounting hardware, etc...what would be a general estimate for the scout box for an fj40?

Would an Astro conversion work too?

I installed an Astro coonversion recently and am extremely pleased with the results. It's very similar to a Scout and the availability of parts is much easier. What I don't know is how it would work with a PTO.

Unfortunately the Astro box is in the way of the PTO driveshaft too...
