It seems that with some research, Car alarms are a waste of money. What ideas are good to keep people from driving away with my project? Im sure this could apply to trucks in garages as well, since that could give them a shelter to figure out how to start your LC.

How about....
Battery disconnect device which attaches to terminal

Pull fuse for starting engine (fusible link that goes to starting relay)

Disconnect coil wire (one that goes from coil to middle of distributer)

Hidden kill switch

Any other ideas? If my truck sits for a coulple days in the same spot, I should spend the extra few minutes each time I shut down to make it harder to steal?

Put an ingnition cut of switch in a hidden spot under the dash. a simple switch inturupting current in the ignition.

How about housing a 185 pound rottweiler in the cruiser?

A kill switch or the like should be ok and maybe an external device like a club, at least for the visual deterrent.

Pulling ignition wires or fuses would work, but mind you, it adds to wear and tear.

.

Here's an idea. Put a battery kill switch in your lockable Tuffy console. Then when you have your Tuffy locked and the switch off, people will have to break into your truck, then figure why it won't start. IF they figure out that there must be a switch in your console, then they have to figure out how to get into it. THAT's a good idea.

True. My idea is pretty complicated. A visual deterrant even as insignificant as a blinking LED in the dash would probably be enough to make thieves stray.

Has anyone else thought of just putting velcrow on your .45 and stashing it somewhere under the stering column? That should deter most car jackers once you stepped out of your cruiser...

Shifter lock:

I find an 8 1/2 x 11 portrait of Chuck Norris usually does the trick.

Actually the best I've seen is removing the steering wheel.

How I have no idea.

one small can of pepper spray will solve that problem.

How about just removing your coil wire. Most people who steel cars will not waste their time trying to fix it. All the ideas are great, but what about someone with a tow truck. A tow truck can take a car in under a min.

what happens when they want to roll your truck onto a trailor ( know people who can do this really fast) and your steering wheel isn't there but all they have to do is manually turn the wheels or stip it into N and roll it outta there. I like that shift lock feature! very cool!

Why would anyone even bother, even a criminal mind would pass on the trouble.

Coil wire, kill switches... you don't just want to keep your truck from being stolen, you want to keep it from being broken into.

.

LED dash light seems to be a quick solution that works for most thieves. Real cheap too.

I still think a 45 would settle things, but the shifter lock is really tempting...

I don't see how the 45 would help protect the truck when you're alseep in bed. Maybe the thief would be so happy that he just scored a cool gun, he'd forget to steal the truck?

run the ignition wire to your cigarette lighter. To complete the circuit you have to push the lighter in to start it and when you leave just take the lighter with you. What thief would know to look for that and who would have a back up lighter thing with them?

Laters

Actually I never thought of sleeping outside my cuiser before, considering the fact we've been unseperable since the purchase. After a couple of years, you get used to that upright sleeping position...

It's meant as a deterrent. If they want to steal your truck, they're gonna steal it no matter what you do.

Had a friend who was a re-po man years. He could get any car.

Thats a cool idea.... Maybe even run the ignition wire to the horn so you have to honk it to start it. I know that would get old quick.

Macneill is right when he says "If they want to steal your truck, they're gonna steal it no matter what you do".
If you have a big enuff tree in the yard you could chain it to the tree.
Or use Exiled's idea but put the lock on the foot brake and pull the fuse so you do not run the battery down.

Jwest, said "you don't just want to keep your truck from being stolen, you want to keep it from being broken into".
My solution to this do not keep anything worth anything and leave the doors unlocked.
