I removed the valve cover to see a mess
There is big time sludge build up.
Is there a safe method to remove this much sludge?

I was going to use some ATF in the oil before oil chamge and switch to RotellaT 5w40 syn.
BUT will that cause big chuncks to sludge to plug up the motor?

Will AutoRX http://www.auto-rx.com/ help?

Keep on cross-posting Kurt :D last time I checked that motor (with its notably durable head gasket :flipoff2:) was found in over 25% of the 80 models offered over its north american production run Rick. Sadly though, even if you own an 80 with a 3FE you do seem to get better results if you post a question about it on the 60/62 forum, where it was found in much smaller percentage of the models covered.

autorx is discussed at length in the forum at www.bobistheoilguy.com. they think it is good stuff. You could also search on Cary to find some good threads discussing whether or not to do this. I think the consensus is not use any additive unless you have to because of the risk of knocking a big hunk of gunge loose and having it block something. My suggestion is that you buy a boat load of 15w40 diesel oil like rotella and do a series of 1000 mile changes and see if that helps. If it don't go with autorx.

yup, looks like too much for a quick flush. Patience seems better..

Holy moly, what type of oil are you running? What change interval? That looks like hell in there. I vote for a slow steady cleaning process.

Oh poop, I did post in the wrong section. At least the 3FE can cross dress between the 60 and 80 section :D

How do I move this post to the BETTER section? :flipoff2:

Anyways, It has run M1 10w30 All its life with a 3000mi per oil change

Man, that's hard to beleive. I've got 165k on my engine and it's damn near spotless inside.

Wasn't your 80 in a similar state when you pulled the valve cover. What did you do with that one?

And with only 104K too? the PO must not have liked oil changes,

Defiantly AutoRx, will probably need at least 2 long doses.

Post those pic’s over at BITOG and see what they say.

If you don’t feel like registering I'll post them over there.

Kurt,

Scrape some of that out, mix a little used oil and radiator fluid in it and send the sludge off to a lab for analysis with Beo's name and return address (snicker).....

Gee,

That motor has had really good care.........

The rest of the vehicle is also likely to be waiting to fall apart.

well, at least it's not rusty inside the engine.... :D

they did pay you to take over the rig, right? :D :D :D

Rust in the motor???
The valve cover has some rust on it.
I think it has more than 104,000 as the speedo cable is new.
The interior is like new. The only damage is the worn driver seat. The rear defrost doesn't work and the latch on the arm rest storage area is broken.

If you want to post it for me that would be great.
Post a link when you post it.
thanks

LandToy did you ever try AutoRX? I ordered some for the cruiser tonight (its $5 off per bottle tonight, maybe tomorrow?) , just wonder what your experience has been?

I am still in the research mode.
As I don't drive the 62 very much, I don't know what method to use to clean up the motor, if any.
The last time I put gas in it was over a month ago.

My 40 valvecover looked just like that when removed.

I change my oil more regularly and continue to drive the snot out of that old F.

I would clean it up as best you can and continue to drive it...

My--don't dick with it more than you have to--$ .02
