I want to thank Jim Reiss of Lone Star Cruisers for inspecting the vehicle. After talking with him and Christo Slee, I elected to pass. The major factor was the amount of surface rust on the underside caused by the 6 winters in the NE. The surface rust was so bad that the 4WD Lo linkage was frozen.

The search continues

If someone else is interested, you probably could call the guy and get it for about $13k or less:

Here is Jims inspection report:
Hood wouldn't latch easily and in-cab handle was sticky. My guess is cable is rusted or needs lube.

Other recap:

No woodgrain on dash surfaces, only on doors and center console
Driver seat average wear for 100K miles
Cig burn on driver's visor and above pass rear on headliner (12-15 brown spots)
Other dirt on headliner in various places, worst part of interior.
Smoked in extensively, though not too bad smell
Carpet fairly clean, has all 4 Lexus mats
Leather in good shape but slightly soiled and could use cleaning
Touch up paint on hood poorly done
Bug deflector has rubbed paint slightly
Missing driver side windshield wiper arm cap
Missing tailgate latch handle
Left rear bumper plastic slightly cracked
RR fender flare has two scratches
Small windshield chip that has been fixed
Various chips on front bumper/grill area indicative of road salt/sand
RF bumper cap damaged needs repaint
Power antenna not working
Various other scratches on painted surfaces, indicative of tree limbs, shopping carts, kids' bicycles, nothing too unsightly

Original battery
Oil and tranny fluid clean
Brake fluid low
Some rust on cooling pipe surfaces, misc bolts
Excellent Michelin LTX OEM size tires

A/C makes hissing noise while driving....you can hear Freon moving.
Possible exhaust leak, either where pipes mate to head or at welded union just down from head.
Will not shift into 4-LO, linkage rusted and frozen.
Lots of surface rust underneath...possibly other lurking issues (like brakes) similar to 4-LO shift linkage.
Emergency brake handle yields no resistance, bottoms out. Rear brakes likely rusted.
Some light surface rust inside gas cap. Gas cap door stiff.

All electronics appeared to be working.

IMO it needs axles services, brake jobs front and back, transfer case shift linkage repair, tune-up, exhaust leak addressed, cosmetic issues on outside, good interior cleaning (headliner?), a few replacement parts as noted.

There you go.

imho, i like the lexus wood only on the doors and center console. the tacky toyota wood is aftermarket even though port or dealer installed and does not hold up well. i have seen lexus' with the extra wood, looks good for about 36 months then turns to crapola. nothing like the factory stuff!

ken, good luck on your continued search - any reason you're looking at the lx as opposed to the lc?

jeff

Doesn't sound that bad. I guess I'd have to see how bad the surface rust was. Gotta figure it would need axle service either way. Tune up probably needed for many 7 year old cars. Brakes are easy/cheap. Exhaust leak and T-case linkage sound a little troublesome. Headliner cig burns would drive me nuts and I'm guessing C-Dan would tell us a new headliner is hella spendy.

I am looking for a 97 either 80 series of LX450 with Diff Lockers. I will take the best conditioned, best price I can find. I'm in no hurry, so I can be patient and get the right rig. Even though the little kid in me says NOW NOW NOW! I was still tempted to get it, but when Christo and Jim say they would pass, I have to listen to experiance.

I'll feel better this weekend driving th4 FJ40 up red cone pass.

Ken,

Did a search within 200 miles of Austin on autotrader and came up with about a dozen trucks in your range ($10,900(130K)-$14,400(86k)) - all '95-'97 LC/'96-'97 LX with lockers. Don't know what it looks like around you...I can check one out if local -

Good luck!

Tucker

Thanks Tucker, I'll do that search and let you know.

Yeah you will. I wish I could make it ... looks like an awesome run, Pics as usual.. ;p

Man, with so many well kept vehicles around I'd pass on a beat up rig like that as well. There are a lot of near creampuff rigs around and I've looked at many. That would be in the bottom 5% in terms of condition based on what I've seen. Good call.

Romer, you did the right thing. The rust on the vehicle might be attributed to its partial life in the "rust belt".... but it could easily get the same thing from being on the beach here in Texas. There are a lot of clean ones around. I will call the salesman that I dealt with in Houston and advise him of what you are looking for. They had five 80's on the lot the day I went there and he said they usually have a couple come in a month. If he gets something clean in and it has diff. locks then he can call. Do you have a color preference and what is the maximum mileage you would accept.
